Hi all , so we are now 2 weeks into our sons diagnosis.

we have now figured out with the help of a good friend (who's daughter has type 1 too), that our son's icr is 11g to 1/2 unit of novorapid..........but i need your help (again lol)

reading figured out via >> 50gc divided bt 4.5 = 11
so 11 gc per 1/2 unit.

ill confirm info for you to read 😉

Breakfast 50g carbs >we give 4.5 unit's
Dinner 50g carbs >we give 4.5 unit's
Tea 100g carbs > we give 4.5 units <<<<<<<<this i don't get.........

She said a tea he's having 22gc per 1/2 unit so would really only need 2.5u??

he's having twice the amount of carbs yet only requires 4.5 units and it see's him through the night.

I have attached a pic of his reading's 😉

Hi, insulin to carb ratios can vary through the day, just to complicate things, so you need to determine what they are for each main meal. I can eat twice as much per unit for lunch as I do at breakfast, and then twice as much per unit for my evening meal. If the 4.5 units works for the meals you have described then it looks like you have found the ratios you need 🙂

Hi,

My daughter's ratios change as the day progresses too, for breakfast she has 12g carbs to 1 unit insulin and by teatime this is 20:1. Proof is in the numbers you see post meal.
You are doing great so early into it ! 🙂

Thanks guy's 🙂 i'll look at adjusting at tea then 🙂 although no nurse has told us to do so or even shown us what to do lol.
He had 2 low's yesterday and at 6am this morning, but he has a cold now too so im to presume that's what's made him lol

Hiya,
colds and illnesses tend to mess blood sugars up, known as another spanner in the works 🙂
As your son is newly diagnosed he will be going through what is known as the honeymoon period. This means his pancreas will splutter and spurt insulin out at random times untill it conks out completely.
So control will be very eratic until things settle down.
You are doing a great job and good on you for learning as much as you can from day one to help out your son.

Thanks Sue 🙂
Massive learning curve especially when it's all between work too lol, we will get there slowly.
