Until recently I used H&B's Omega 3, 6 & 9 supplement and then I discovered Gold Label Four Oils (for horses and ponies). It contains Evening Primrose Oil, Wheatgerm Oil, Cod Liver Oil and Pure Salmon Oil. The product for humans costs £26.99 for a little tub of capsules (or less when it's on special offer) while a 1l bottle of the product for horses costs just £9.00. OK...it tastes dreadful, but it's only in the mouth for a nanosecond.

NB: It's not that I'm tight...I simply appreciate value for money...and the fact that \I'm Scottish/Yorkshire is just a coincidence.

All I can say to that is 'Naaayyy lad, naaayy!' :D
Teehee.

The only problem I've encountered is with dosage. The label says 1 tblsp per day for a pony, 2 for a horse and 3 for horses over 16.2hh. I've opted for a dessertspoonful.

Have a look at this guide. Horses are heavier than you think. image.png Unless you weigh 150 kilos, a dessertpoon is way too much! Human dose is more like a teaspoon, I'd say.

Thanks Robin...you've helped to avert an overdose. I'm beginning to think I could ask any random question and someone on this forum would be able to give an informed answer.

I buy a ltr container of cod liver oil for a couple of quid it's labelled for horse use haven't told the dog she has an identity crisis 🙂
H&B are probably one of the most expensive places to buy any vits and supplements from.

Now that sounds like a challenge...😉[/QUOTE

Well Sue....if it's good enough for your dog it's good enough for me. Any idea where I can find an inexpensive version of H&B's Super One timed release multivitamin/mineral tablets?

It's well worth looking in other health food shops and quite often independent pharmacy's or boots are worth a look.
I picked up some natures aid evening primrose oil at a quarter of the price H&B were selling it for. Supermarkets have their own brand multi vit as well, so well worth a shop around. 🙂

Erm,...... I jut eat plenty omega 3 rich oily fish. A small can of mackerel or sardines flaked and tossed through some salad leaves is a quick, cheap, delicious and healthy lunch.

Thanks Sue...I'll have a hunt around.

Of course you're absolutely right...I should be able to get all my nutrients from real food. I'm on a LCFF regime with tight calorie control which has enabled me to lose lots of weight and get my BG under control. It's working so well (latest HbA1c of 31) that I don't want to tinker with this winning formula until I reach my target weight. After that I'll have to increase my calorie intake which will give me an opportunity to try to eat a more balanced diet. In the meantime, I need a multivitamin/mineral supplement just to cover any shortfalls. I'm a work in progress.

If you do the calorie thing, I'd be curious to know what difference there is between adding a spoonful of neat oil, as per your ponderings, against a small can of sardines or mackerel (with the goodie oil), bearing in mind the canned fish is part of your daily eating (carb/cal equation), rather than adding x number of calories from an admittedly nutritious, but the nevertheless highly calorific source.

I did a rough calculation which gave me c40 calories for the oil supplement alone or 140 for a small tin of mackerel fillets in oil (which would be my oily fish of choice). You're bloomin' right. I should just incude the fish in my daily allowance. Doh!

And save the cost....

I try hard to avoid any messing around, like supplements or meds when I can do anything to avoid it.

Oh oily fish! Dear oily fish!
By far and away my favourite dish!
Infuse me with your Omega 3,
Please oily fish, come dine with me!

Oh, take away my chicken bhuna!
Replace it with a slab of tuna!
And though I love the taste of gammon,
I'd much prefer some Scottish salmon!

Imagine eating with every course
Some pilchards in tomato sauce!
If every herring could be mine,
Then life on Earth would be divine!

So, fill me up with oily fish!
Believe me, it’s my dearest wish!
My heart’s desire, where have you been?
Embrace me now, oh plump sardine! 🙂

Just eaten sardines on toast for lunch - lovely! 🙂

Nice work Northerner. I've put oily fish in my food diary twice for the week ahead.
