Indian meal

Hi all,

Going for an indian at the weekend & being as i'm a creature of habit will probably be having:

Starter
Pakoras

Main
Chicken or prawn dopiaza
Pilau rice

Pudding
Birthday cake (1 small slice of my DD's 22nd cake)

1. being as i'm now carb counting at teatime instead of a set dose of QA does anyone have any idea of the carbs in any of the above? I do have the carbs and cals book but can't find some of the above food in it.
2. would you inject all in one go or some at the start of eating then the rest after 1 hour of eating?

For restaurant meals I would always split my injection. I would also wait until my main course arrived before my first injection in case it was late, and personally I would avoid a starter with carbs 🙂 Can't help with the carb count I'm afraid - I tend to 'eyeball' the food then take a complete stab in the dark (so to speak!).

as a matter of interest how did you get on with it?

Eating out is the hardest thing, and waiting for the main course nearly always gives me a high later, although I think Alan's idea of a 'no carb' starter would work (tandoori checken?)
 
Well i'm sorry to have to say that after asking questions re my indian meal we ended up with other plans however we will be going for this indian meal in the next few weeks so all help will still be very useful & i'll come back and let you know how i get on with it.

Thanks for sending me the link for the thread though, i'll post on it with my results when we eventually go for the indian 🙂

Hi Gill, when I was on MDI, I would always split my dose due to the high fat content in Indian and chinese (rice is always tricky for me too). I would take 3/4 of my required bolus and then take the other 1/4 about an hour later. This usually worked for me. A bit easier on my pump these days I multi wave for indian/chinese/pizza.
 
This isn't any help for takeaways and restaurants, but you can massively minimise the effect of Indian or Chinese food with cauliflower.

The issue from either of these cuisines is less the sauces/gravies, it's all back down to the rice. But you can swap the rice very easily.

All you have to do is grate/chop cauliflower heads to the size and shape of rice grains - food processors work well for this. You can either then fry it in a pan for fried rice, or if you prefer boiled rice, just nuke it in the microwave for a few minutes. Hey presto, something with the consistency of rice, practically no carbs at all. Do it right and you won't even notice a taste difference.

Another tip if you're making mash is to simply boil and mash cauliflower heads with plenty of butter. Again, do it right and no-one will ever notice the difference. Great way to zero the carb count of some meals and also to get vegetables into fussy children!

Sounds like a great idea, gonna have to try it.....rice is the 'devil's food' 🙂
