I am a new type 2 diabetic. My greatest worry is about ensuring my family does not suffer if I cannot work due to ill health. All insurers approached have refused to insure me due to my diagnosis. From our experience and knowledge of available resources, I am open to suggestions on how to get an insurance policy for income protection or critical illness cover with my diabetes diagnosis. Help, please!!

The two categories you cite are the trickiest to insure, bearing in mind the potential for challenges living with T2. Of course, it won't help that you are just diagnosed because no insurer can get an idea of how you might manage it. That said, underwriters will be heavily influenced by statistics, because they are "guessing" the future.
My suggestion would be to contact an IFA, offering whole of market advice. Doing a quick Google search, this site came up, but to be clear I know absolutely nothing about them, so they might be good, bad or even ugly, but maybe worth a quick call:

An IFA I saw when we were taking out our first mortgage found a critical illness cover policy that covered both me and my wife despite my T1. The policy paid out when she received a terminal cancer diagnosis about 6 months before she died. Not something either of us could have foreseen.
