Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
afternoon all, I have just quickly read a forum about snacks before bed. I know about this (a bit) cos I asked my Dr ( when he let me have test sticks) why is my reading a nice 5 before going to bed and a 13 when i get up. his answer... He dont know ! anyway online I found something talking about breaking carbs down while I am sleeping which makes sugars.
So reading this I remembered that may help but EVERYONE on the forum is a type 1 .... have they diagnosed me wrong??? do II's do the same???

very worried because since doing metformin twice a day and having no method of testing and feeling so rough how the diskens am I to know that what I'm doing is right?

ohhh head spinning.. its like living with a ghost I just cannt make any of this tangible.

boo hooo..!

Hi tinkerbell.

Firstly, from your earlier post, approx 20% of type 2s are not overweight, so there's not a definite connection between obesity and type 2. Just in case they try to bully you into feeling guilty.🙂

Secondly, the metabolic processes overnight do tend to vary between individuals, but largely are the same for T2, T1 and non-D I think. The difference is that non-Ds have insulin aplenty, T1s (and some T2s) inject insulin to allow for the carb breakdown, but most T2s have little insulin circulating to send the blood glucose to muscles, cells or the liver for fat storage. So it just stays on the merry go round until insulin levels increase enough.

The body also has a mechanism for raising BG before waking in readiness for the day called dawn phenomenon.

A protein snack before bed apparently helps some to maintain a better mornign BG.🙂

Do you have snacks before bed? If so, then this may be contributing to your high waking levels. Some people also suffer from something called 'Dawn Phenomenon', which is where your liver is prompted to release an extra boost of glucose as you wake so you (in theory) have energy to start the day - the problem is that as a person with diabetes you can't use that glucose boost effectively and your levels go higher. Some people find they can overcome this to some extent by having a small protein based snack - cheese, cold meat etc. before bed, and also eating soon after waking as this switches off the liver's boost.

Everyone here is a Type 1 🙂 😛

How late do you eat in the evening - I've always found that if I eat something carby close to bed I'll go to be high and wake high (although you are only waking high).

My body never seems to process glucose when I'm asleep - so if I eat late at night I'm sure to wake high.

But If you don't have any test strips, it is like you are flying blind :(

i found that as a T2 i was suffering from the dawn phenomia ...so so have a snack before bed and it has helped x

This is something I have noticed as I've been doing some self-testing & have found I'm quite high first thing. I have been as high as 8.9 but I do test very early as I leave the house at 7.00am so my fasting test is normally at 6.00am. At the weekend in the 7's as a bit later testing. I pay for the testing strips myself so being a bit picky over testing. I did try some cheese before bed & there was a reduction but not a huge amount. Perhaps my bit of cheese not enough or I went to bed too early & it wore off.
I've also read us ladies hormones can also effect your bg levels. Something I'm going to ask about when I have my next tests due early April.
