My right shoulder sags from the weight of my bag,
Hunched and contorted like an old wizened hag,
For it?s filled with the gubbins and sundry detritus
That accompany the treatment of diabetes mellitus.
Oodles of needle tips, both new and used,
A litter-strewn wasteland that cannot be excused,
Tear-offs and needle caps, those small plastic bits
That cover the pointy part that goes into my hips,
There for emergencies, ten jelly babies,
Test strips as bloody as the rivers of Hades,
A wallet, my credit cards, a blood testing diary,
A packet of dextrose that is well-past expiry,
Pens for my insulin, both slow and fast,
Without them my next meal may well be my last,
Drugs for a headache, tickets and keys,
A small wad of tissues in case I should sneeze,
Lancets and cereal bars, a small book to read,
A prescription for pills that I no longer need,
My bag could be emptied of half of this stuff,
So I think it is time that enough is enough!
Out with the rubbish and clinical waste,
Out with the dextrose ? I don?t like the taste!
Without all this in it my bag will be light,
Do you think I should do it? I think that I might!

:D

That's certainly impressive Northerner!

In my bag (of varying sizes depending on where I'm going) I always have the essentials such as blood testing & injecting paraphernalia, glucose tablets, carton of fruit juice, fruit pastilles, banana, oatbake bar, digestive biscuits, purse, reusable plastic carrier bag and of course my mp3 player (wouldn't leave home without it) and then for longer occasions sandwich and crisps and extra juice!

Ann I'm just curious as to why you have 2 ipods??
Jackie

I have an ipod touch in my bag on which I play games and have wifi connection . I enjoy playing my games .
I also enjoy listening to music and audio books whilst I walk. I have a very small ipod nano ( the new one) and I have that tucked in my trousers whilst I am walking about so the 2 come with me everywhere ( it means I have 2 charged batteries to go at too !!!) crazy I know :D

Diabetes wise, I carry day to day:

- testing kit
- dextrose tablets
- pencil case with a spare cannula, spare reservoir, open vial of Novorapid, insulin pen & cartridge of Novorapid, needles for pen

If I go away overnight, depending on where I'm going I'll work out what I need - ie going home to my mum's for a night I'll just make sure I have enough insulin & needles if the pump went wrong, or if I'm going away for work (which I'll soon start doing!!) I'll take loads of hypo stuff, and plenty of spares of everything really!

If I go away for more than a night, I take Lantus too, just in case 🙂
