Impaired healing?

Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I was only recently diagnosed and what originally kicked off the checks that led to my diagnosis was going to the doctors with a small sore on my neck that wouldn?t heal.

looks like I?ve been type 2 for a while, probably a few years (turns out my previous surgery had me down as diabetic but didn?t tell me)

I wondered if anybody had any experience with/or knowledge of the impaired healing that I now seem to experience. I?ve got lots of tattoo and a few piercings and I had my toenails removed (for medical reasons) and I never had any problems healing, but the last of all this was a few years ago, so I don?t know if I was diabetic then.

the friends that do my tattoos (they are professional tattooists) are worried about tattooing me now, in case I don?t heal properly, I?m also interested to know if tattooing could affect my bg. I not one of those that enjoys the experience as well as the end product. I find it very, very painful and have to beg them to continue while fighting the tears.

Hi,
as long as you keep your blood sugars under control then healing is not a problem 🙂

I hope you remember when you have your tattoos that one day you will be a little old lady and they need to look good when you reach that vintage :D

Having tattoos as a diabetic should not cause a problem as long as your blood sugars are under control and the tools used are steril 🙂

Should be fine to have more tattoos, once your blood glucose levels are under control.

What treatment are you using? Diet and exercise alone or with oral or injectable medication? If you're testing blood glucose levels, what readings are you getting?

Remember, getting good control won't happen over night, but takes several months to get the right treatment methods, then continuing efforts for ever.

LOL Pumper_Sue, i'm well past the point of worrying what my tattoos will look like when i'm old, but i'll be the most colourful one at bingo 🙂

Copepod i'm on 4 x 500mg metformin a day, was diagnosed about 6 weeks ago and built up to 4 a day, been on that for about 3 weeks now, as for reading, disappointly high, is the answer, i test before and 1 hour and two hours after food and i'm averaing over the day of a reading of 9/10, it is improving but very slowly considering how much i'm changed what i eat and how much excercise i do.

I'm not planning any new tattoos anytime soon, but its something that came up in conversation and i wondered if anybody had experience of it. when i have tattoos i have bigggggg tattoo (last one covers the whole of my back) dont fancy a wound that big not healing lol

Give it a chance, then - you've only been on your current metformin dose for 3 weeks. When averaging, you should really look at fasting / before meal numbers and after meal numbers in different batches. As well as blood glucose numbers, you might also want to keep a weekly record of your weight - if you're currently above BMI 25 (crude measure, but adequate unless you're a muscly rugby player), then, as you get nearer to 25, you may well find that blood glucose control improves. It's not an overnight effect - or even within weeks - within months is a better timescale to consider.

Thanks Copepod, i'm trying to learn this thing called patiences but its wearing thin already lol

my dad keeps saying he's gonna have the lufc logo or a smiley face tattooed on his stump, but i'll clamp his wheelchair if he actually tried seeing as he lost his leg because a routine toenail removal wouldnt heal. 😱
