Well no, I'm not really! 😉 But I have been a bit more vigilant in my post-meal testing lately due to the ongoing scare with my eyes, and have discovered that, after many of my meals which I thought were OK, I am getting quite a spike at the one-hour post-meal stage. So, I thought I would try and adopt the strategy that have read some of our pregnant ladies have reported using, and trying to get those spikes right down to below 8 mmol/l with some judicious insulin timing and rigorous testing. 🙂

Obviously, this is an infinitely easier task for me than a pregnant lady - I really do not underestimate the efforts you put in to protect your little ones, which has me in awe, so I hope this doesn't come across as flippant!

OK wont ask the expected due date :D

you had me going there, I thought you had made medical history...

Lots of little Northeners🙂. Good luck with sorting out the spikes but please make sure that you don't treat them so aggressively that you end up with bad hypos. Big hugs to you🙂

Watch out for the cravings! These days it's much easier than it used to be to find gherkins in the middle of the night (as my son-in-law will testify!) :D

Hope you sort out the spikes.

Ugh, gherkins! 😱 I was running the Stockholm Marathon a few years ago and at one point they were handing out what I thought were cucumbers, which I thought would be nice and refreshing. Nope, they were gherkins, yuk!!!

As a very small child I bit into what I thought was a plum (my favourite) only to find that it was a tomato. I only acquired a taste for tomatoes in adulthood! I still don't eat them on their own, even straight from the plant.

I still can't eat avocados. My mum gave us one when I was about 14 and it didn't taste remotely like I was expecting - they shouldn't be allowed to call them 'pears'! Same thing with olives 😱

Well, it's worked so far with my breakfast (I only ever have a slice of toast these days). I was 7.1 on waking, injected, then waited an hour before eating. I was 6.8 at 1 hour post-injection, 7.8 at 2 hours, and 6.4 at 3 hours 🙂 Constantly amazed that I can inject a whole hour before eating and need 8 units for 12g carbs in the morning. Of course, nearly all due to my liver and not the actual food!

well done northerner ! 🙂

I asked my dietician about the need for one hour post prandial readings when the time action profile of the QA means that it (usually) peaks after 2 hours. She explained that it takes 1 hour for carbohydrates to be digested so they usually recommend having a small snack (eg 80gr CHO) to prevent a hypo one hour later.

ahh.... the joys of being a Type 1 !!! 🙂🙂

Hoping that '80g snack' is a typo! 😱

Hmm...fail before lunch as my levels are at 9.5 😱 I do have some sniffles though, so probably part of the reason. Injected and waiting to see it drop a bit before eating 🙂

Well, if you were preg you'd have been horrified if your fasting was as high as that, and what will you do if your BG is 4.1 instead - inject all that an hour before and you'll be reaching for the Lucozade .....

I'd recommend an extended bolus meself - half up front say HALF an hour beforehand - and half after you eat? Or 10 minutes or 15 or 20, you'll have to play.

I mean pumping, when I need an extended, I usually do a third or 40% upfront and the rest over however long I decide needs it.

My fasting levels are raised partly though inactivity, partly lack of sleep, and it seems I've got a bit of sniffles at the moment. For the morning, long experience has shown that I can inject for up to an hour before eating and my levels will stay more or less steady, or possibly fall slightly, so a split bolus wouldn't work - I'd go high then low. I probably ought to have some basal as another reason currently for my high fasting and pre-lunch levels is the length of time between boluses - 13 hours overnight (i.e. from 5pm to 6am) and 6 hours between breakfast and lunch. 🙂

I waited 45 mins between injecting and eating, by which time my levels had fallen by 2 mmol/l. I'll test again an hour after eating 🙂

So yes, I'd make a poor pregnant lady - perhaps I should be thinking more about getting my levels better prior to conception? :D Should I be taking folic acid yet, do you think?

Bah! Tested an hour after eating and I'm 10.4, which I guess isn't too steep a rise from my pre-injection level of 9.5, just need to improve my starting levels. This pregnancy lark is harder than I thought! 😉

congrats northie on your upcoming baby........

but in all seriousness, i hope it helps your eye problems 🙂

Thanks Laura 🙂 It's early days yet (I only just found out and it was unplanned! 😉), but I am gathering some useful information about how I can improve the post-meal spikes, just need to get my pre-meals to a better level. Two hours after eating I was 8.7 and then 3 hours after I am down to 6.4. 🙂

Hey Northey, have you considered that your pregnancy might be the natural outcome of an extended honeymoon?!
