Hello there!

Right I have been ill for the past 2-3 weeks!
I had a cold and it sent my levels so high that my meter reader would not give me a number it just said "hi" I went back to work for a day and then my throat started hurting so I went back to the doctors and I had Active Toncilitus (Sorry about the spelling, I'm no good with it!) He gave me some penicillion (Sorry spelling!!)

My throat no longer hurts but I am finishing off the penicillion. I have been speaking to various Diabetes nurses as my meter reader will give me a number in the morning (A very high one) and then as soon as I eat it just says "Hi" I can now check for Ketones and it was between 1-2 but yesterday it went up to 3 and now today it went to 4, I'm awaiting my call from the diabetes nurse but it is really annoying me. I have had to inject imense amounts of insulin to try kepp it down and it is not working!!

My Lantis has been moved up from 12 too 24 then 28 and I have now moved it up to 30. not only that but I have been told to take 10 Lantis when I wake up aswell. My humalog is even worse I had over 230 units of it yesterday and my meter reader was still saying "hi"

My pens are deffinately working and so is my meter reader. I'm starting to feel a bit funny and I have not been sleeping just dozing, I'm due back to work on Monday but if I am still like this then I can't go!! I'm having to inject like every hour and to be honest I am just so fed up. I have had mini light headedness and I don't really know how to explain it... I will walk somewhere and it feels like my head take 15 seconds more to catch up with my body?!?!

Any advise please from you lovely people???

Given you are having to inject every hour - I would go to A&E.

If that ketone result is a blood result it is high - please call NHS Direct or go to A&E.

I have been speaking to diabetes nurses and they have said that if I feel sick then I should go in. the ketone result is from my urine. the nurse did say that I was having unusual amounts of insulin and she has been calling me everyday. so far my ketones have not gone that high so I am currently waiting for her to call me so I can update her!!

There is the possibility that you may need more antibiotics.

I had septic tonsilitis prior to diagnosis. The pain stopped as the tonsils were coated. I only went back to the Dr as I had some blood when using mouth wash - and the tonsils were still infected. I was on antitbiotics for nearly a month.

From what you said about your head - you are starting to feel sick. Rather than waiting for the DSN to call - you could try calling the hospital and getting him/her bleeped.

PS - I forgot to say that 4 on ketostix is high -and it doesn't tell you the current level but the level it was a few hours ago.

having had 5 weeks of one thing and another, I know it is no fun being ill. I'm glad you are getting help and hope you are better soon.

Be patient with yourself and rest when ever you can as it will help, and if necessary take some time off work to aid recovery.

Your recent bout of tonsillitis will have certainly raised your BG's, but also I see that you were only diagnosed in August so you might be having a double whammy of coming out the honeymoon period adding to your problems..

It does sound as though a trip to A&E is a wise idea at the moment, being tired and feeling unwell with those sort of levels it better to seek medical advice sooner than later. If you at all feel sick or start getting pains in the stomach or everything just becomes a complete struggle dial 999 as you will need to get into hospital very sharpish...

Thank you all - I will try calling my nurse again. I have already had 2 weeks off due to the cold and the toncilitus, plus I have had a lot of time of since being diagnosed so I'm hoping I'm okay by Monday (doubt I will be)

I will update you once I have spoken to my nurse :D

Growl - still haven't managed to get hold of her! but my levels have not yet reached "HI" and they seem to be better than they have been - my ketones are no 3/4 more to the 3 I would say but I will still speak to them!! =)

Sounds horrid. Keep drinking lots of water to try to flush out the ketones. The increase in doses you mention are extreme to say the least. As EllieJones says it sounds like you should get to A&E for some proper help.

Hope you manage to get some help soon.

If it was me I'd be straight to A&E. That is a high level of ketones :( Hope you get better soon x

Are you still doing hourly injections ? If you are you will be up all night - I would bite the bullet and go to A&E or a drop in clinic who can assess you.

Well I'm off to A+E I will update you all once I am back!!

Thank you all for your comments!!!

I know you wont get this, but I hope you are better soon xx
