Relationship to Diabetes
At risk of diabetes
Hello, I'm new to this forum and wanted to say hello to you all. I'm a 67 year old woman and I'm prediabetic. T2 diabetes is prevalent in my family and it seems to be catching up with me, sadly. I'd always kept fairly fit and my weight at an okay level. Last March I was taken ill and had my bowel removed, leaving me with an ileostomy stoma and the associated diet problems. I'm back exercising (not quite to pre-op levels yet) but it's the food issues that give me problems. Is there anyone else here in a similar position? Hoping fir help and tips! Please!

If you put ileostomy in the search box at the top right, it will lead you to a few threads which may be relevant.

Hi AniS, welcome to the forum.

Sorry to hear about your current health challenges. Was there anything specific re diet that you're finding challenging?

Hopefully, being pre diabetic, you can make some changes to help keep your numbers out of the diabetic range.

I agree with Leadinglights that it might be helpful to have a look at some of the previous threads of those in a similar position which you can find below.

I'll have a look at the previous threads. With an ileostomy it's difficult to eat a lot of fibre. I'm okay with root veg and butternut squash, I can tolerate a few petit pois, if pureed, likewise chickpeas. No tomatoes, mushrooms, celery, sweetcorn. Not many fruits but tinned pears are okay and cooked apple. No dried fruits. No fruits with external seeds, no rhubarb, plums, oranges. No fruit or veg skins. No seeds, nuts (smooth peanut butter is okay and a small amount of ground almonds). Those veg/fruits I can have need to be well cooked. I can eat well cooked meats. 50:50 bread seem to be okay. The list is long. I am introducing 'new' foods but it's trial and error, a tiny amount at a time and can be painful.

It must be very difficult to juggle all the needs of both conditions. Can you have things like tomatoes and mushrooms if they are as soup.
Pureeing berries and sieving out the seeds and adding to sugar free jelly makes for a better flavour.

Well, tomatoes are rather acidic in general, apart from the skins and seeds. Now I didn't know about the acid, but a friend with rheumatoid arthritis did! Never had to try and cater for anyone with an ileostomy so can't help.

With pre diabetes or T2 diabetes, the only thing you need to try and limit is the carbohydrate content of anything.

When cooking casserole and the like, I've substituted tinned toms with a mix of V8 juice and tom purée, which works well. I can no longer have toms in a sandwich etc.
Sadly the one soup I hate is mushroom, though I've successfully made other veg soups (but that's a winter thing).
Thanks for your responses.
