I've been pondering this today as just today i have had 30g of carb and feel washed out. I know too many carbs isn't good for us lovely folk with D but just how many is too many and what is the ideal?

I don't know what the ideal is, I suspect that could be different for each of us. I try to stick to between 75 and a 100gms a day but not more and that seems to work OK for me. Unless I'm having a hypo day in which case it may be "carb me man and keep 'em coming".

It's surely an individual thing. If you are doing a lot of sport you're going to need more fuel. My son has eaten 275g of carb so far today, and it will likely be over 300g before the day is finished! This is a bit more than usual, but he would always average at least 200-220g (growing teenager). That doesn't count any hypo treatments or unbolused snacks....🙂

I agree with Redkite - it's an individual thing. I'm 47, weigh 7.5-8 stone, and eat approx 200g carb a day. I'm moderately active, and this amount of carb suits me fine. It's trial and error, like evthing else dbs-related in my experience!🙂

I agree I think it's about how much you tolerate. I never go under the 100g mark, mostly because I don't have enough energy, I've upped my fat intake but I'm not keen on higher fat so that suits my needs. If you really low on carbs you need to up calories in other areas to fuel your body so a bit of trial and error I guess 🙂

For me I eat a lot of carbs. I mean, come on I'm not allowed to eat gluten and might have to cut out dairy. I'm not much of a meat eater and I don't like spicy food. Plus I'm autistic so fussy. Take away carbs from me and there isn't a lot left I can actually eat.

Saying that though, I have recently started to eat more fruit (still have to bolus for it).

For me carbs aren't actually much of an issue. But I eat pretty much the same thing every time so I get used to what to inject.

I know a lot of people do the low carbing thing, and if it works for them and makes them feel better, then that's really great and I wish them the best of luck. I just know it isn't really for me. So it is very individual.

The way I see it is that we are all so different. If carbs are wiping you out, you will get to know what you can and can't eat.

What did you eat by the way? It might not specifically have been carbs, but the types of carbs. I find (gluten intolerance aside) I feel really sick if I eat stodgy carbs like bread.

I'm like cooky cat and agree with what they've said.

You need carbs Amber i may start eating a bi less than 100 as i feel sluggish. Bread i ate today. Its so annoying how food can have such an affect on your well being. I've had horrendous eczema on my scalp not to mention the pain in my feet and arms. Im trying so hard to stay upbeat but today i got out of bed and felt lower than i have ever felt. I went back to bed as its the only place i can get away from my feelings. I know there are wonderful people on here that are going through some hard times so im trying so hard not to moan

I'm the same. I'm trying so hard to stay up beat about the whole gluten thing. they want me to eat it for some blood tests but I just can't stomach it. So I've stopped eating gluten. My husband said his depression got better when he cut down on gluten too (though I urge you if you suspect coeliac don't give up gluten until you've done the tests because it's a pain to go back on).

I'm trying to remain positive. Gluten free food isn't that bad, there's so much new things for me to try, I'm feeling great for the first time in my life when I don't eat it. But occasionally it's getting me down too.

It's impossible for anyone to try and stay positive all the time. Especially when you also have depression. So don't feel bad about needing a moan every now and then. All problems are relative to the person.

You need carbs Amber

That's not actually true. The human body needs zero dietary carbs to survive as it can simply metabolise fat for energy, or convert protein into glucose. So it's really up to the individual to decide how much they want to eat.

Any sluggish feeling you have from eating fewer carbs is the result of your body adjusting. Carbs are actually addictive - they stimulate the production of dopamine and seratonin, the 'feel-good' hormones. So when you eat fewer, your body kicks up a fuss. You sorta have to sit it out and then once you pass through the 'addiction' stage and your body also gets used to actually metabolising fat (which anyone interested in losing weight needs it to do), you'll find you don't miss them as much.
