Ice cream. Is it just me?

I think that might have been taro @Lanny, Wu Tao Gou is taro cake. I’ve only had it in moon cakes, it’s erm different.
 
Ah! Thanks for that @Madeline , yes, I’ve had that before for dessert & it’s ok because of all the sugar in it & the lotus paste in moon cake: on it’s own in ice cream it was weird; it’s a slightly greyish purple colour of skin with a greyish off white colour inside & hence the lilac colour of the whipped ice cream! 🙄 Still; it was an experience!😱:D
 
I bet, we cook and eat a lot of Asian food - lockdown and shielding has given us plenty of time to work through some enormous cook books. I find their sweet flavourings very different to Europeans, and the salt egg in moon cake just bizarre.
 
I absolutely do remember the blocks of ice cream and that's exactly where I first got my love of the coffee, pistachio and strawberry Neapolitan from, since I was approx 5 years of age and we went to the Isle of Wight for our holidays.

Browns, who used to own the golf course at Sandown, and the ice-cream parlour there, also made ice cream commercially ........
 
So, their products don't contain either condoms or GMOs - I'm rather relieved to hear that!
 
Glad to have found this thread (well, most of it lol). Next week I'm on holiday with my daughter and family, we are planning on going to our favourite ice cream place, on a dairy farm. We will also be doing a good amount of walking before and after, so I am delighted to see that I can still enjoy some delicious home-made ice cream without too much fear. (It was bothering me, I hated to think I'd have to sit and drink tea instead lol). I will be sensible and do my best to stick to one scoop rather than the banana split with 3 scoops - and cream and a wafer, and let's not mention the flavoured toppings. Those days are now gone, but I don't mind, always been content to just "have a little taste" to keep me happy. That is one "issue" dealt with to my liking. Much appreciated.
 
We found this place a couple of years ago - https://dolcetti.net/ - which does home-made gelato with real ingredients (no "flavourings"). Wonderful for me because I'd been avoiding ice cream, not because of diabetes but because of food intolerances. One scoop in a tub means half a unit of insulin for me (probably wouldn't need any insulin if I were doing any exercise at the time, but I've no desire to go for a walk round an industrial estate in Cirencester!).

I also freeze grape juice to make ice lollies at home, but I wouldn't recommend that to anyone not on insulin. Dietician told me that fruit juice isn't suitable as hypo treatment if it's frozen or heated, so I tried some lollies to see whether I could eat one without a spike and I found it's fine if it's part of a meal.
 
That sounds good and nice that you can have a treat once in a while. Ice cream doesn't bother me, hubby eats it all the time or one of his lollies, but it is only something I fancy once in a while.
My nurse did ask me if I ate many grapes, chance would be a fine thing with my hubby, but I think that was the answer she was looking for, so I guess they should be eaten with care as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure those ice lollies are delicious and refreshing to have as part of a meal.
I have to be careful as I have had a fruit allergy since childhood, plus other intolerances which seem to increase as each year passes, olive oil is a huge no for me, so I'm pretty used to checking out what is in foodstuff, just that my list of questions might grow longer now ha!
 
I make my own ice cream. Or rather my Magimix Ice Cream maker does it for me, but I control the ingredients. Last evening I made some chocolate ice cream using high quality cocoa powder that tasted just like 70% chocolate. I did add sugar, to partially blanket the bitterness, two level tablespoons in 1 litre, so a serving portion would be half a teaspoon amid all those luscious creamy fats. The machine took twenty minutes to make it Italian style, so I filled cones with it. The cones had more carbs than the ice cream.

I’ll be making a slightly more carby ice cream this weekend, mango with a squeeze of fresh lime juice. Might add a few drops of Apple and Rhubarb Gin. That’s four of my five a day in one ice cream. Virtue personified, that’s me.

Makes me think, I would hate to be T2.
 
Ahhh Mr Whippy ice cream. We have one every so often at the beach. It never affects my BG adversely thank goodness.

As with most things diabetes-related, it will be very individual, so ideally you would check for yourself to see how your body responds.

But even if it does cause some BG upheaval for you, there’s no reason why you couldn’t have one occasionally as a rare treat.
 
I'm always fine with one of the local Cornish makes (Kelly's or Moomaid both have lovely flavours) if eaten during a walk and I need no insulin.

I have a very cheap Andrew James ice cream maker which makes brilliant ice cream using a cream/milk mix+ some vanilla paste. Last week I used a jar of finely chopped preserved Kumquats in syrup to flavour and omitted any sugar. No idea of the carb content of the jar of Kumquats. I don't think there was any nutritional info on the jar (writing was in Greek). Turned out lovely and doesn't need much insulin. I've made it with half a jar of preserved Bergamot peel in syrup too... that worked out at 120g carb per litre so 100g portion was only 12g carb. Gor the Kumquats on hols in Greece and the Bergamot peel came from Lidl during Greek Week. The syrup keeps the ice cream fairly soft when you freeze it.
 
The high carb food groups I’ve cut down both quantity and frequency. My one exception is ice cream, which has always been my favourite. I have a mini Magnum most nights and tolerate it (BG-wise) quite well. I only occasionally push the boat out with puddings.
 
@HenryBennett I still do have a mini lolly, Asda's cheaper version of the Magnum and I thoroughly enjoy it - one of my "just a taster" occasional treats.
@Pattidevans Cornish ice cream is one of the best - loved it from an ice-cream place in St Ives, black cherry - oh my - would be worth travelling back there for another taste!

Interesting that Asda do it, because it’s actually the Sainsbury’s own label imitation I buy. £2 for eight little ice creams as opposed to £3 for six of the “proper” Magnums. Tight or what?:D😛

same as Asda's - £2 for 8, same 3 varieties as Sainsbury's - gotta love a bargain! 🙂
