Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all,
Do any of you suffer with IBS ? I do.Now have to deal with Diabetes type 2 since December. Have had a few bad days, with the IBS. It's hard knowing what to eat at the moment, while trying to keep to my diabetic diet.

I don’t suffer from IBS per se, but have a restricted diet as I have a permanent partial small intestine blockage, caused by adhesions due to gastric surgery. I also have gastric dumping syndrome ( for the same reason) and as I only have a third of my pancreas ( now atrophied) it doesn’t produce any digestive enzymes so I need to take replacement enzymes every time I eat otherwise food would go right through me and cause malnutrition. These three conditions don’t work hand in hand unfortunately and deciding what to eat is a nightmare TBF. Also as a diabetic, insulin dependant I need to balance my carbs too. I actually feel quite depressed reading all that! Only joking but it is a pain in the butt ( sometimes quite literally) and it’s like spinning plates and walking on a high wire at the same time. As a diabetic the aim is to reduce your carbs, not just sugary things, pasta, rice, bread, potatoes. I don’t know whether you have a blood glucose meter but I think it would be a good idea if you did, as the only way you can know if what you are doing is right is to measure your BGs. Obviously you will have a restricted diet and will know what is best for you. Is your diet high in carbs at the moment? Do you steer clear of vegetables, that’s what I struggle with, could you maybe start a food diary? Maybe you could ask your GP for access to a dietician, probably just via video link or phone call at the moment but better than nothing. Hopefully someone will come along soon who can help you more I just wanted to let you know nothing is insurmountable. Elaine.

Triggers for IBS can be individual and you need to decide which is more important to you.

not sure if you are been prescribed any medications to help but doctors can prescribe different ones to try and ease the symptoms of bowel cramping and knotting. if you are alternating from constipation to loose stool then do talk with your doctors to see what they can recommend.

I am type 1 diabetic with ibs. It's difficult I know, but it must be hard for you as you are probably controling your diabetes type 2 with diet I'm guessing? You poor thing. I think the others are right, talk to the doctor about getting the right ibs treatment. There are many out there. I take sugar free laxido. I still get flare ups with different foods but it works most of the time at the moment.

Sorry to hear about your IBS @Woodside

Perhaps you can give members here an idea of the foods that you find keep your IBS happy for their experiences of how diabetes-friendly they might be.

Alternatively, as @eggyg suggests, the most direct way to work out whether your diabetes is happy with your IBS diet would be to get a BG meter and check results before vs 2hrs after eating, looking for a BG rise of less than 2-3mmol/L for any meal.

If you need to self fund your BG meter, the most affordable meters members here have found are the SD Gluco Navii or the Spirit Tee2 - which both have test strips at around £8 for 50
