Got a bit low and started eating anything I could get my hands on. Chocolates, sweets, cakes, chips, bread and rice. This carried on for 3 weeks, then suddenly I came to my senses. I'm back to low carb and testing 4 times a day, but now I'm scared. Two months before my next HBA1C test. Please tell me that everything is going to be alright, or am I fooling myself??? (Last HBA1C was 49. The one before that was 55. Diagnosed in February.)

Hi Leonara, None of us are perfect, well I am certainly not, and do eat my fair share of naughty stuff. You are not alone. But luckily, you have 2 months to get your levels back on track, and I believe the result of the HBa1c is heavily weighted to the more recent weeks. So yes, everything may well be OK for you.
Are you on meds? What are your readings like now? Good luck x

Leonora I doubt you're the only member here who's been in that situation...the important thing is now you're back to low carbing & managing your diabetes...I have no idea whether or not your HbA1c will be higher at your next HbA1c test...however the HbA1c is heavily weighted in favour of the last 4-6 weeks of our management...so with two months until your next review I would say you have a reasonable chance of pulling things back...good luck.

Thank you very much for your reassuring words. I have calmed down now. Just shows how powerful this forum is. FYI I am on Metformin 500mg twice a day. My diabetes is steroid induced so my morning readings are usually quite good. I wake up with readings in the low 5s. I'll be completely honest, while I was going through my binge stage I didn't check my blood - I was rebelling! Today, pre-lunch my reading was 6 and after lunch is was 8.9. After I've taken my steroid tablets (morning) it flits between 6 and 9, no matter what I eat. There's nothing I can do about it unless I starve myself. I'm a thin diabetic so I can't afford not to eat!

Hello Leonora

As the others have said, you aren’t the first to have fallen off the wagon during their diabetes journey, and you certainly won’t be the last.

Falling off isn’t the important thing - it’s the getting back ON that matters, and you’ve done that! Plus having been through this experience you will know what triggers to look for in the future and to take care when your mood is low next time.

Hope your A1c is better than you fear, and if it’s not quite what you are hoping for - you will know why and don’t beat yourself up about it, you can’t change the past, but you can move in to a better future. This game is all about taking every situation as an opportunity to learn more about your own individual diabetes experience, and to keep trying and not give up.

Well done 🙂

I don't think three weeks of bingeing will have any long lasting effect on your HbA1c...it will give your overall average for the last three months...so with another two months & a bit of hard work you could maintain your average or even show some improvement...if you can up your activity (if you are able) then again that would help to give you a boost towards your review...the numbers above seem fine...the morning ones are always the highest & most difficult to get down...and with the steroids as you say there is little you can do...you've done well so far Leanora...there's every reason to feel positive about your next HbA1c

Bet that was delicious, hope you get away with it, best wishes o_O

Hi. Leonora.I did the same last year only it lasted longer than 3 weeks, but I have managed to get back on the wagon and start getting my numbers back down. You can do this. And if you do have a bad day just remember we all have them from time to time.
