Ive just popped out of the office and picked up something ready for lunch.
When I got back 2 of the girls where I sit both said they were hungry and needed a snack.
One of them (the one I want to slap at the mo) opens up a big bag of popcorn (one of the large sharing ones) and starts eating it.
At that point she says "I wish I was diabetic just for 1 week"!!!

Really!!! No you dont love!!!!

I said to her "errrr, no you dont! Im diabetic for life now and wouldnt wish it on anyone"
To which she replied "Id only want it for a week to stop snacking and lose weight!"

Like its that frigging easy!!!!

GRRRRRRRR!!!!! 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡

Aargh! I started to say to myself, 'but why does she think.....' then I realised what the problem is. There is no thought process there at all!

I'm speechless!

Some people just open their mouths and words fall out...no thought process involved. Grrrr 😡

Tell me about it!!!

Step away from the co-worker, or alternatively bump into her and spill her popcorn. 😉

On the upside, it could be considered she's paying you a massive compliment; your lack of snacking and weight loss is something she covets? Work with what you've got and just take the compliment (once you've strangled her 😉 ).

All the popcorn has gone now (she ate it all!!!), maybe i'll what until she has a cup of tea in her hand!

i did say to her, maybe if you ate a proper filling breakfast you wouldnt need the snack 2 hours later!!!

Love those cards DL. The girls I sit next too could see that the comment annoyed me and asked if I was ok.

Don't get too upset Stitch, it's just ignorance, and unthinkingly hurtful. I doubt it was meant unkindly. I regularly get "I wish I had one of them, I'm worn out" when I'm in the wheelchair. I'd go with DLs advice, but without the violence and anger.

Maybe we should start a "things people say" thread just to find out the depth of ignorance around the place.

I don't blame you for being p****d off!! Also how much weight does she think she can lose in 1 week? What an ignorant, insensitive comment. Be the bigger person (not literally, if she keeps eating sharing bags of popcorn LOL) and ignore it xx

What an insensitive person!
But I agree, maybe it's a backhanded compliment in a way, and she is jealous of how well you are doing 🙂

I had a friend stay over last night, she is currently on Slimming World.
She heavily criticised my breakfast, (2 scrambled eggs and mozzarella) because of the high fat content, whilst she made a bowl of 3 weetabix, loads of grapes, a banana and low fat strawberry yoghurt to mix it all together...
My eyes almost popped out at all the carbs... But my food choice is definitely worse 🙄

Try to think of it as a character building experience.
I dyed my hair from the age of 15...all sorts of colours. Then one day, a couple of years ago, I decided to stop. I announced this decision as I didn't want people to think I was simply falling into a state of neglect. The almost universal response from other women was "But it'll make you look so old". Mmm...thanks? I was in Boots one day and a well meaning stranger approached me to recommend the dye she used...because it had excellent grey coverage. The cheeky mare. Fortunately, by that time I had learned to bite my tongue or she'd have been on the receiving end of an absolute lashing. 😡😡😡

Thanks for the comments everyone. It does annoy me when people are ignorant to it all. I know its not really their fault though as they just dont fully understand what we have to go through on a daily basis. I think if she did spend a day, not a week in my shoes she would soon change her mind. Especially on the day that I go food shopping and have to look at everything that goes in my trolley that has a label on it (not too bad with fresh stuff, but packets of things). And thinking about everything that passes my lips (no rude comments there DL, I know what youre like, as the same thoughts crossed my mind 😳:D) and working out what affect it may have on me and my body. Worried that if I dont do things right I could end up with complications later on. I dont think people realise some of the emotions and what we have to deal with on a daily basis. I think if they did, they wouldnt say some of the things that they do.
I have now printed out the Diabetes Etiquette sheet and stuck it on my desk in plain view!!!

A very well reasoned reply Stitch. I think we could all use this as a template for how to deal with the complete AHoles that some of us work with. I must confess though that personally I think I preferred the 'slapping her across the face option'.

What a stupid thing to say! Mind you, I have a co-worker who is also diabetic, who insists that I am NOT diabetic. But I guess he knows best huh?

Why does he seem to think you're not diabetic??? Is he your doctor or consultant? Since I'm assuming he isn't I would find it very difficult to keep my mouth shut! You're a better person than I am ha
