Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
My wife has been ill for 21 years, Cancer was the first part, an incurable type and the medication she went on caused Diabetes type 2 but until this year I never really got how much of a complete *very bad word* it is.

I mean the Cancer, Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia was bad, life threatening bad, in fact 5 out of the 6 patients in her clinical trial died, the Medication that kept it away was likewise bad it caused many side effects and we are 99% sure it caused the Diabetes.

It seems to be so random and nasty.

We handled her diabetes via diet and it was going really well normal results were between 5-7 and I thought that meant she was fine, she healed slower and had problems but still in my head nothing like the horrible side effects of the cancer and medication.

December 27th we had a consult appointment, he was very apologetic as he started talking and you know that is a bad sign, it seems her Kidney's were taking damage from the Diabetes and nothing they could do would stop it.

3 months later complete renal failure but we dealt with it like everything else, home dialysis (peritoneal) made things a little more tricky especially because the fluid you pump in every night is glucose based.

Her average blood glucose via hospital blood test came back as 8.2 not too bad.

And still I never really saw Diabetes as the biggest issue even though it had just killed her Kidney's off.

A week ago she woke up with acid reflux and nausea, we thought like anyone else would a stomach bug or something she ate, well after 4 days of trying everything and it getting worse and her getting weaker at 4am this gone Monday after a talk with 111 she was taken via ambulance to hospital.

I had never heard of a silent heart attack, Diabetes can interfere with the pain network so no chest pains or symptoms you ever see.

It isn't good, two of the three major arteries have blocked and they need to do a test Monday to see if the muscle is dead (as in scar tissue) or still viable, if viable they will look into unblocking the arteries, if not then its medication route.

Her heart is functioning at 15%.

Her Renal failure means she can't have an MRI or CT scan because the dye you use to map the heart has no where to go and will kill, so they have to do a special type of echo cardiogram on Monday.

On the scale of everything my wife has wrong from Cancer to Renal Failure diabetes was always a side note I mean we expected the cancer to get her in the end.

I also wish so called silent heart attacks were advertised more.

On my way to hospital now, for the night visit and to set up her dialysis (I know it better than them)

Hello Jason I`m overwhelmed with your thread, your dear wife and yourself are really being subjected to the most appalling health conditions. Our thoughts and love go to you both.

I’m so sorry to hear this Jason and am sending huge best wishes to you both as you battle another challenge.
It does sound as if she’s had a long but not uneventful remission from her ALL and I’m wondering if the use of Prednisone (which of course is a glucocorticosteroid), during her chemo, increased the risk and onset of diabetes. It’s a fear I have should I go the chemo route on a trial.

I have Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (also treatable but incurable) and developed type 2 diabetes three years after my cancer diagnosis. However I don’t believe mine was pharmacologically induced but who knows if there’s a link?

I know of some of the meds she will have needed to take and they’re heavy duty. Weakening of the heart muscle is listed as a possible effect of late symptom ALL. I wasn’t aware of the silent heart attack risk however.

You must be so worried and feel desperately sorry that she’s having to fight this on yet another front. Leukaemia and diabetes don’t play nicely together and it’s a concern of mine as I probably go into treatment in the New Year. The hit on the kidneys trying to flush out these poisons takes its toll which in turn takes its toll on cardiac function.

I really hope they can find the right treatment to stabilise your wife. I can only send my very sincere best wishes and understanding to you both. I won’t stay strong because I’m sure that’s something you’ve got down to a fine art!

Amigo x

Mate, i just had to log on to comment on your story, that is so harsh what youve been through, I hope you catch a break and have something go right now, you sure derserve it, best wishes

Hi Jason. I want to offer you a glimmer of hope. My type 2 Dad had a silent heart attack in July. He was living his life normally, although feeling unwell, for a few days after it. When he was sent straight to hospital by his doctor, he spent a week in intensive care and was rated as 50/50. He recovered and is now back at home. Take care.

@Jason Alcock - You guys really have been through the mill. I hope you found your wife to be comfortable this evening.

I'm not going to comment on your wife's condition, except in my reference to silent heart attacks.

The exhibited and experienced symptoms of heart attacks tend to vary men<>women. Many, many, many more women are diagnosed during investigations for other things (like indigestion) than men. Women are much less likely to complain if chest pain than men.

Thankfully, to date, I haven't experienced this myself, but at our local research centre where I am involved, there are several staff members who have come to diabetes research, via cardiology. Our area is considered strong in both fields (cardiology and diabetes), so it may just be there this happens.

I hope your wife can grab a decent break with her health and bounce back from the latest setback.

Thank you all, we will know more on Monday, I will keep everyone informed, Thank you Bronco Billy for letting me know about your Dad, Amigo, yes we were warned during treatment back then that it came as a possibility but after all its cancer and well whats a little thing like Diabetes compared to that, especially in the 90's cancer was the boogeymen the "C" word.

I set up her Dialysis and she pretty much fell asleep as soon as it was, very tired at the moment which is understandable.

Please let us know how things go with her. Best wishes.

Oh and you’re absolutely right. Even now the big C brings side effects that are hard to avoid. The drugs I may need have a significant link with Atrial fibrillation and cardiac issues.
A hard but necessary price we pay at the time.
So sorry your wife has been affected.

I bet you’ve become an expert carer after all you’ve been through! Well done to you for your care and devotion.

I went to hospital this morning at 6:30am to do Paola's Dialysis, it went well, we chatted and laughed, talked about going home, Doctor came in and explained what we were going to try to do, first the echo and then treatment, maybe a chance to come home on Friday.

I got her weight done we did the blood sugar and I bought her Minecraft on the phone because she was bored, I came home and was looking at a ring online I thought she would like (her old one kept catching on things) as I was about to buy it, I received a call from the hospital, the nurse sounded upset and said I needed to come Paola wasn't well, when I got there they had just got her back from her first cardiac arrest, she slipped straight into another, they tried the best they could, but her heart was too damaged, no pulse to coming back, I told them to stop, she was gone.

I am just lost now.
She was the best of me.
