Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in 2005 while serving in the Royal Air Force and after suffering a major Multiple Scleroses relapse in 2010 my diabetes progressively got worse.

My GP had prescribed me with 1000 grams of metformin and 160 grams Glycoside to be taken daily. I was then prescribed insulin when my MS medication did not react well with my diabetes. My Hba1c blood sugar level had increased significantly to 12% /108 mmol. I was pleased to have finally come off the insulin in October 2019 and have continued to take the tablets.

In July 2020 while at home recovering from another MS relapse and self isolating during the COVID-19 Pandemic I decided to do something about my diabetes. I spent time researching online, books and watching youtube videos, using this info I started to manage my weight and noticed immediate improvements in my health.

In just 5 months I have lost 3st/19kg in weight and am now back to my ideal weight not seen in more than 15 years and I now feel much healthier.

To aid monitoring of my diabetes, I recently invested in a Contour NEXT ONE bluetooth blood glucose meter from the diabetes UK website and I cut down the carbs in my meals to about 70grams daily, this seems to have done the trick and now my weight is down to 13.5st/85kg and my Hba1c is now down to 6.1% or 43mmol and plan to reverse me diabetes asap.

I will continue to manage my diet by eating real foods, intermittent fasting and continue with my restricted exercise program while I recover from my recent MS episode.

Hello @infodia42 and thank you for joining the forum and sharing your inspirational story.

Big congratulations on the weight loss and getting blood sugars under control. These are big issues that many of us work to overcome, and you did it with the added difficulties of MS.
I hope that you are now able to enjoy the benefits of the weight loss.

Very best wishes for your continued success.

Thank you for your kind comments, i still have work to do and have one issue plaguing me, i am feeling thirsty daily for the past few months and am a bit concerned.

Well that would suggest 5hat perhaps your blood sugars are a bit higher but, if your HBA1C is recent that suggest otherwise.

Well - why assume the thirst is caused by high blood glucose? Yes it is a common feature of that, but it ain't the sole reason for thirst, by any means. Have you actually mentioned it to your GP? One of the ream of standard blood tests I have always had as part of my diabetes reviews is a review of the health of my kidneys. So - how are your kidneys doing?

I will speak to my GP tomorrow and pose the question to him about the thirst. My daily blood sugar levels have been in the normal to pre diabetic range for at least the last few months with no spikes and only the occasional low reading and I have been testing at least 3 times a day.

Sorry no idea what you mean, a pre diabetic range of daily BG readings? I've never heard of such a definition.

It's perfectly possible to have a pre diabetic level of HbA1c, but not BG meter results.

Testing blood glucose with a meter basically tells you your BG that split second. It does not tell you what it's doing or done for every other second. The HbA1c test gives you a better picture of that, and indeed as has been said, yours being 43 this doesn't indicate that you have shot into the stratosphere very often at all. Hence definitely worth querying what is causing this.

Does your doc ever ask for a urine sample?

Hba1c result of 39 mmol/mol, 5.7% today from GP, very pleased with the work put in to improve my health and manage this type 2 diabetes. I have learned so much in 8 months all via youtube and this site and wish, i had done something about the condition when first diagnosed many years ago.
I am keen to help others with beating this condition, feel free to drop me a line if i can help in anyway.
For me the key was a complete lifestyle change, no more sweets and reducing my carbohydrate intake to between approx 50g to 75g daily and eating healthy foods.
I hope this helps me with my ongoing battle with relapse remitting Multiple Sclerosis.

Well done! You must feel so good and hopefully, as you say, this will help your MS.

Good job @lfrano63 on the weight loss and HbA1c in the 30s.

I'm stuck around the 42/43 mark for HbA1c and would love to get back into the 30s. I'd also love to drop 20kgs to around 60kgs target weight. So whereas I have not been diagnosed as Type 2 but pre-diabetic I can't seem to get the great results that some of you on here are achieving.

Also my morning BS tend to be between 4.8 and 5.5 and very often hit 5.2 on the head which some on this forum know as a HS.

I'm not on any medication, but am vegan (so a grain and carb-heavy diet) and tee-total (I've always drunk water as my preferred drink) but can sometimes get too stressed and reach for sweet treats.

One would think it'd be easy for me to do just a little bit more to tip me into the 30s for A1c and lose the excess weight but I'm finding it quite hard. I'm even doing the 800 low carb Newcastle diet with one shake meal replacement and one normal meal a day, but the weight's not budging. I'd really love to feel fitter stronger and younger as some have reported.

What am I doing wrong?

Any wisdom or encouragement would be appreciated.
