Hi all,
Today Alex forced me to go on a bike ride (found my bike in the garage after a clutter clearance!). We had a lovely time on the cycle path for a few miles and saw cows and sheep and birds singing etc..Anyway, it is the first time since diagnosis that i HAVENT thought about diabetes! I completely FORGOT about it as we were riding along and waving to people on the motorway bridge! Also, Alex must have sensed that i felt different as he was the happiest i have seen him in a while and so relaxed!:D
People have told me that you get to a point where you feel relaxed about it - but i didnt believe them. It was so lovely not thinking about it for a few hours - so i just thought i would share that with you all and tell you that you were all right about relaxing! Lets hope this happens more often!:DBev

Bev, glad you both had a great day.

A few points though.

First, about the motorway bridge... hmmm, er, you're not supposed to ride push bikes on the motorway - its dangerous and illegal. You should know better 😉

Second, yes, you do learn to live with diabetes, and not let it control every aspect of your life, even for adults it takes time and confidence. Of course you need to keep in your mind that its there.

I did at daft thing on Friday, it was our first walk since Bruce was accepted for training, we started walking at 11.00, I'd got sandiwches a flask and my insulin in my rucksack. We walked for two hours, up and down some pretty fine hills, crossed forest floors, the two of us happy to be back together.

The food was on my back, but I knew we'd be back around 13.00 (my food time) so didn't bother stopping - got to the car, sorted Bruce out with water, a biscuit and then into the boot. Got my sandwiches out, to sit with him and just knew I'd left eating too late.

Didn't have a meter with me, but knew I'd just knocked on the door of a hypo and some nice person had opened it! Injected, ate, had the emergency choc bar (YUK) and came home.
Felt groggy, had a rest for an hour or two and was right as rain.

I was sensible and had all I needed with me, we were having such a great time, working hard, enjoying watching him run back and forth covering three times the ground I did, him tracking, finding ways through and the ways through include accounting for a 6'3" human to follow him. Impressive! Just didn't take into account the closeness to food time and the energy I'd consumed doing what we'd done.

The more you enjoy yourself, the easier it is. That was my first self induced hypo in well a good while. A little care and attention, a rest and I was fine - no harm done.

Just plan and be prepared. Then enjoy yourselves!

Lets hope you spend more time on your bikes during the summer, I really hope I can get my balance sorted then would love to do some of the canals around Wiltshire. Got a feeling I need a waterproof bike and a wet suit 🙄

And watch that motorway.

He he David,
It wasnt a motorway bridge! It was a footbridge over the motorway! Barely enough room for a bike let alone a car! Its a new bridge they have built near junction 16 - its for access for the farm on the other side of the motorway. It was quite nice waving to everyone - most of them waved back etc.. but that was probably illegal in case we distracted them! lol.

When you get your balance sorted out i will see you on the canal path!:DSounds like you and Bruce had a good day too - just eat earlier next time!🙂Bev

That's great news, Bev 🙂

That's really good Bev, hope you forget about it more from now on (err if you know what i mean ) xx
