Relationship to Diabetes
At risk of diabetes
Hello, I've just had a call from my docs surgery telling me that my blood sugars are "pre diabetic" The receptionist couldn't tell me anything more and my appointment to see the nurse is not until Monday. I am gutted, I have recently (last six months) joined a gym and ten weeks ago started the second nature diet which is a low carb diet, I really felt that I was doing the right things for once. I guess I'm just looking for other people's experiences.

Hi @Mama J, and welcome to the forum. No need to panic, the pre-diabetic label means just that and it is sensible to treat it as a warning flag rather than a sign of impending doom!

You will have got the diagnosis in response to the result of a HbA1c value obtained from a blood test. It will be somewhere between 42 and 48. It is useful to get the actual value so that you know where you are, and you can see how it changes with time to see what progress you are making. The thing about the HbA1c is that it says something about your blood glucose control over the last 10 weeks or so and the full effects of your gym work and low carb diet may not have started to show up yet. So keep going!

In preparation for your visit to the nurse, read around the forum and check out the learning zone on the red tab above. Ask any questions you like on here, we have all been there and so question is considered silly. There will always be somebody with relevant experience around to help.

Those things you have been doing have probably been sufficient to make a difference to your HbA1C and if you hadn't then you could well have been in the diabetic zone.
I should thing that carrying on doing what you are will bring you down to a normal level by the time you have your next HbA1C which you should push for in another 3 months so you will know you are on the right track.
The HbA1C gives an average level over 3 months but they use a fudge factor to the more recent weeks.

Thank you Docb, that advice seems spot on. I appreciate your input.

Thank you leadinglights, I will push for a 3-month recheck and up the exercise maybe. I appreciate your support.

Hope the changes you have been making to your diet and level of activity continue to bring you improvements @Mama J

Let us know how things go with your follow-up results 🙂
