Evening folks 🙂

I am soooooo stupid!!!

I Injected at 5.00pm and only just remembered at 7.30pm to eat!

The problem is my levels have been so low ( for me ) I was on the net and found myself not feeling right I just sat there and started to space out and felt really odd, so all of a sudden i felt hungry and ate to many jelly babies as i panicked but feel ok now, i did not test as i only have 5 strips left and will only be allowed another prescription until Friday when i talk to dn, all day not felt myself and keep coming over all dizzy, is this normal? 😱

Are you OK with not driving and risking highs/lows? If the answer is no, go to the surgery and stand there until you get an emergency prescription!

How many strips are you allowed a month?

Honestly? i would not have the bottle to do that :(

50 🙂 no where near enough!

Ant, you need 50 a WEEK, and not 50 a month! This is just so wrong - you should not have to miss a necessary test because you are being restricted in this way! You MUST confront them on this issue and do not take no for an answer. If they still try and restrict you then demand to be referred to a Consultant. Having met you I am more convinced than ever that you are a good candidate for a misdiagnosis, and are a slow-onset Type 1, but in any case, you are on insulin and must have an adequate supply of strips.

Alan i agree but i hate confrontation! i no it sounds daft but i find it hard to argue my case as many others do.

50?????? And you are on insulin????

That's plan wrong & dangerous

I know it's not easy if it's not in your character, but you must bite the bullet and do it for the sake of your health. Imagine you are doing it not for yourself, but for your wife and kids, so that they have fit and healthy dad who is able to keep himself safe.

It's been a very difficult time for you with your levels being all over the place, and you shouldn't have to go through all this to get what thousands of other doctors and nurses would automatically give you, but I found very early on that if you stand your ground and argue your case, you will get what you need.

This is a letter I wrote to my Practice Manager when they tried to restrict my test strips:

I am writing regarding the recent decision to reduce the number of Accu Chek Aviva blood glucose testing strips on my repeat prescription from 300 to 100 per repeat. This has been done without consulting me and therefore without knowledge of whether this is appropriate for my needs.

I have Type 1 diabetes and test on average 6-8 times per day. I need to test for a variety of reasons, but have a valid reason for every test, using the information in order to stay safe and maintain good blood glucose control. This is reflected in the fact that I have maintained an excellent HbA1c since diagnosis five years ago. I need to test before administering insulin doses, for cases of suspected hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia, and to monitor the effects of changes to my diet on my levels. I am also a runner and need to test before and sometimes during exercising to ensure my levels are within safe limits. I also need to test more frequently during periods of illness, or when my insulin requirements are changing due to a number of factors thus making insulin dose calculation less reliable. Furthermore, it is a requirement of the DVLA that I test before driving, and during long journeys in order to avoid hypoglycaemia.

Restricting me to 100 strips per repeat will entail putting in a new request every 12-14 days instead of the current 6-8 weeks. All other items on my repeat provide for 6-8 weeks supplies. It is illogical and inefficient therefore to place this restriction on my supply of test strips since it entails not only inconvenience and wasted time on my part, but also extra work both for the surgery and pharmacy, and therefore extra cost to all parties. I feel that this is an unnecessary and inappropriate use of NHS funds.

I would ask therefore that you restore my request for 300 Accu Chek Aviva test strips and issue me with an amended repeat prescription

They changed my prescription back within the week. What they are doing by restricting you in this way is just wrong and makes no sense.

Unfortunately, in this game of diabetes its a case you have to spell it out to them. Saying that I was nervous of approaching another doctor after the last one said I need to eat more carbs and get my sugar levels up.

I did in the end and it was worth it, spoke to another one today and she explained some thing else clearly as having other problems. Just put in a repeat request today for strips and just hope the doc that said I am testing too much has not mucked up the prescription qty.

Out of curiosity which meter do you use?

I am going to ring my dn this morning and try and get this sorted out as you say I need to test a lot, I have 2 strips left and should not be worried about something that I need especially when my levels are coming down a lot!

Hi pav I use the Nexus gluco rx meter which I was given by dn last year which I find very easy to use and plus you can download all the data from the meter onto my laptop 🙂

Above all, don't forget that if you drive you MUST test before setting off and ensure you are above 5.0, otherwise you will be breaking the law - you can't do that if you've run out of strips! 😱

Up until recently, you will probably have been too high generally to be below 5.0, but as you found out yesterday, that's no longer the case. Imagine if you had felt like you did whilst driving or on the bike 😱

Good luck, I hope that they finally agree to stop penny pinching and endangering you, and adding unnecessary stress into your life! 🙂

Just looked on Amazon and over the counter prices for those strips are like ?60 for 200, compared with the likes of other test strips they are reasonably priced, though not the cheapest strips compared with the SD code free.

Yet they are still messing you about by restricting your supply of them, think about drafting a letter explaining why you need more including DVLA's requirement to test guide lines.

I have done the same thing Jalapino, I have also eaten and forgot to inject many times😱 It is harder to forget now I have a pump but not impossible:D
