Hypo's After Exercise

Hi All

I find that after an intensive exercise session (2 hours of kickboxing on a monday night) I tend to have sensitivity/ regular hypo's the next couple of days after. Is this normal and should I adjust my dosage for the days following exercise?

I was diagnosed before Christmas and guessing I am going through the 'Honeymoon period'. At the moment I am injection 1no unit of insulin for every 30g of Carb and having 12units of my Lantus injection every morning.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? and also, how long can I expect the honeymoon period to continue for?

Hi Andy. Yes, it's quite normal to find your blood glucose running low for 24-48 hours after exercise. What happens during intense bouts is that your stores of glycogen (stored in muscles and in the liver), are used up, and then the body has to spend the next day or so squirrelling away some more. So this means more glucose being taken out of the system, hence the need for less insulin, so yes, you may have to adjust your dose downwards. I think somewhere on the forum there is a link to the Runsweet website, which has been recommended as having a lot of good advice for exercising with diabetes. It may be in the Info for Newbies section, or you may find it by typing it in to the search box ( top right of the screen).
As for the Honeymoon period, I'm afraid it's anybody's guess how that will progress, we are all different, its just a case of testing and reacting to what your levels decide to do!

I've been diagnosed 10 years, and I'm still finding my diabetes is springing new surprises!
 
Hee hee - you have personally discovered something I never have or will - ie that intense exercise can last your body for approx 48 hours!

I am 16 months after diagnose and still confused! This forum is amazing though for support and any question is welcome. I also find exercise brings lows, though I don't do anything as strenuous as kickboxing!
I think I am still honeymooning and some days I take very little rapid insulin, depending on what type of day it is. I test loads and also am sensitive to feeling the lows coming which helps. Good luck with everything.
 
I have spoken to my local diabetes centre. I've been finding recently that I have been injecting half a unit of insulin for say, bowl or shreddies and/or porridge and 3 hours later I will hypo.

The nurse suggested that this was part of the honeymoon period, I only take insulin before my meal if my BS is 8 or higher. She also suggested I drop my Lantus to 10.

I guess i'll see how that goes!
