Hi wheatley.
Hypos are usual in the early days as you are getting used to the injections & your pancreas is producing insulin (the honeymoon period).

Are you regularly testing?

Hypo wise depending on your bloods - 4/5 jelly babies will work instead of sending you too high.

Which insulins are you taking?

Hi Wheatley,

To treat my hypos I've found that about 150ml of fruit juice works best for me followed by some toast or a crumpet if it's a while until I eat my next meal

xx

I have fruit juice and test my BM 10 mins after to check they are going up and then I have some longer acting carbs such as toast as I've been told if I don't wait for my BM to come up first then the toast might interfere and slow down the fruit juice being absorbed. xx

hey thanks girls

yeah im currently testing four times a day before each meal and the 4th before bed then if im feeling that an episode is coming on i do one there up and down all over the place maybe im over doing it as a bag of haribos is sending me through the roof

im on novarapid and levimer

I'm not familiar with levimer (I think most people are on here) so couldn't help on that. You on 1 unit to 10 grams of carbs for nova?

Yeah I'd say a bag of haribo is over kill but they are yummy!

I forgot to say if you have 1 hypo then you are more likely to have others afterwards.
If you have a nurse assigned to you, ring them for a chat if you are worried but you'll settle down soon. It's just a learning curve for your body, I was the same as you back in the early days & I'm back there now with hypos so I know how you feel.

I think a bag of haribo would send anybody through the roof 😉 I'm not sure how many you need in comparison to jelly babies but I think it will be much less than you realise. Everybody is different but I think the recommended amount equates to 10-15g carb. Do you have the carbs and cals book Wheatley? You can get it for your phone if you have a smart phone. Having said that I know it is easy to panic when you are having a hypo and it feels aaaages before it starts to go back up.

I'm on lantus and humalog but think I'm going to change to novorapid and levemir as my levels are all over the place at the moment, and I've been a diabetic 18 years!

xx

Hello Wheatley. I am also type 1 and luckily I have an insulin pump. However I still get the odd hypo. I find 3-4 jellybabies will get me back in line.

Hi there,

Rule of thumb is 15g fast acting ie approx 3 jelly babies and test again after 15 mins, (so 15-15, easy to remember). If still hypo repeat process etc. This will stop you going too high and bouncing around 🙂, Mind that is if u are MDI or pumping I believe 🙂

my doses are ones only set by the diabetic nurse who rings me every couple of days i think ive got to see a dietician and they will show me how to count carbs is it?

the doses have doubled since i started 2 weeks tomorrow !

im feeling really tired and groggy when my sugar levels are normal and tend to ride best when there up dont know if its just because my bodys used to it being like tht !

its a bit of a bummer aswell for me as its onna end my career in the submarine service which ive grown to love

im not sure what im going to do when i get the boot

it all seems alot to take in and im up and down with moods which is so annoying

Good job you ain't female then, it seems diabetes has a grip on our right to choose when to start a family.

As long as you have good control it won't rule your life & if you have questions you can ask on here 🙂

Nowt wrong with travelling but you do need to get dealing with your diabetes under your belt first Wheatley - I mean after 40+ years I know pretty much what do do if sheet happens - and importantly so does my husband.

Become competent first, I should.

But if you're halfway up Machu Pichu and go hypo, there's no air ambulance. My niece went to Peru last year on a properly organised 'trek' and she ain't diabetic, she doesn't mind roughing it and eating roasted guinea pig* as long as there's beer LOL - but it even worried her, there not being any sort of Plan B. Also quite a few of them - all previously healthy etc - were quite ill at times what with altitude and Montezuma.

I said I dunno how you did that. She said Well - it would be rude not to, it is their national dish. Plus it was the only recognisable thing on the menu in a number of places. And guess what? she says. It tastes like chicken .... LOL

Unfortunately that is too true Laura!

It may take a while to get your doses right but once you are confident with your medication, correction doses, treating hypos etc then it shouldn't control your life... I'm not saying there will never be times when it doesn't seem to take over but we all have difficult times and as long as you have the support there is no reason it should stop you doing a majority of things.
