Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone, I am Didi and I am a newbie on this forum.

Having been recalled to the surgery by my Doctor after my morning appointment, she did a glucose level test that showed up as 19.1. She showed concern that I was going away, but I promised to see a Doctor if I needed to. Today my glucose level is 19.8.

My problem is that I seem to be getting the symptoms of a Hypo when I am having a Hyper and am now thoroughly confused! Help!!

Symptoms can be similar sometimes when you’re hyper as when you’re hypo. Always go by the numbers not how you feel. Do you have insulin?

Thank you for the information. No I do not have insulin, I have Metformin 500mg. I started out borderline 2-3 years ago and it has gradually crept up and now it is 112. I have been having hypers without realising it, so do not know what it was on Monday when I felt really ill!

Presuming you’re in this heatwave that may push your numbers higher. Keeping well hydrated can help. Knowing you’re that high I would want to get treatment though and to check for ketones.

No ketones yesterday, Doctor checked. This has all crept up on me!
I have made a lot of mistakes since I was diagnosed, My Mother was diabetic, not me! I finally stopped denying it and accepted that I was diabetic. That was a major step for me. Second mistake was hmmmmm..... only type 2 so a mild form of diabetes!
My blood test before Christmas came back all red and I avoided the surgery like the plague and hoped I would not need any prednisilone. I went back for my annual blood test and see my diabetic doctor in October although I may need to go earlier if I keep testing that high.

For a type two to return blood glucose to normal numbers it is usually necessary to restrict the amount of carbohydrate in your diet - presumably, with those numbers, you don't ?

Hi Didi, welcome. As Drummer said, carbohydrates are the enemy, especially rice, pasta, potatoes, bread regardless of white or brown, fruit is also high in natural sugar so needs to be restricted, some of us are ok with a few berries, unfortunately I’m not as I spike but I can tolerate two small apples a day as long as I space them out. Testing is key to working out what foods work for you or not, especially before and 2 hours after meals. I found it really helped me to keep a food diary and track my readings against meals. As type2 you are unlikely to get a meter from your gp unless you are on insulin or certain meds, most of us bought our own.
