Hypo - Hyper?

So hypo is anything below 4 "4 is the floor". What is hyper?

Technically, anything above about 7.5 is hyper but it's up to the individual to decide what they wish to do about it and at which point.

The guidelines are generally to keep post-meal BGs below 8 or 9 and premeal BGs below about 5 or 6, so any corrections can be based on that but the symptoms of hyper generally won't be very apparent until you get into the teens.

I would recommend you buy the Ragnar Hanas book "Type 1 diabetes in children, adolescents and young adults". It is a brilliant book for all the things you want to know but are afraid to ask. I've learnt loads and thought I was quite clued up (I wasn't).🙂

Thanks for your reply. I've not really taken much notice of any mention of this book because of the title & due to being an adult. I've now just taken a look on Amazon & clicked on to have a brief look & having done that i'll certainly be buying a copy.
 
I was put off at first but it has everythign you need to know. It answered questions I'd been wondering about for years.

We have been told a hyper is a reading of 14 +, above your target range is high til you hit this. This is when you need to consider testing for ketones etc.

Think that's what my meter uses, when it gives me the gipsies warning to test for ketones. Although I had an idea it was 13 ....
 
I think Hyper can have many meanings depending on what question you are asking:

- Is it the level at which you are going to be suffering from immediate complications if you don?t get treatment?
- Is it the level at which you will get long term complications if you stay above that level
- Is it the level at which you are outside the recommended control? (in theory this is the same as the above)

I?ve seen it written that blood sugars above 30 mmol/L are potentially fatal if untreated. But there are a few people on this forum who have been into the 30?s (and higher) and still seem to be alive so that's probably not an accurate number.

I?ve seen it written that anything above post-prandials above 10 mmol/L will cause long term complications and that average levels above 7 mmol/L will cause long term complications.

So therefore from this, hyper could be 7, 10 or 30 depending what way you want to look at it.

Of course different people seem to have differing points of view (a lot of the ?get-normal? low carbers? and Bernstein looks to much lower numbers).
