Type 1
Hi I was diagnosed with type 1 just over 2 months ago. In that time I have experienced a few hypos and delt with them fine, 4-5 dextrose and then a roll or something similar. Followed the same procedure last night but continued to drop from 3.8 to 2.8. This scared me as not happened before. I'm just wondering why, does anyone have any ideas?

Welcome EmanyB. You might not had enough for tea or if I am worried about something my bg drops. Believe it or not I adore to play chess on the computer. I can watch bg going down with a Libre playing chess 😱. Good luck & keep asking.

Hello, EmanyB. Are you on a long acting ( basal) with short acting (bolus) for meals regime? If so, you need to ask yourself the question, 'did I still have active k sulking from a mealtime Bolus on board?' If the answer is yes, then you didn't eat enough carb to cover the insulin. If no, then maybe your basal needs adjusting. Everyone's insulin requirements are going a bit peculiar in the hot weather, you need to work out if you are one of those whose insulin works extra well so you need to reduce it, or if you're one who needs more insulin to mop up he extra glucose your liver is pumping out becaus your body is under stress. It can go either way!
If you are on a mixed insulin, that's a tougher nut to crack, you have to make sure you are eating enough regularly to match the insulin, or another way round, not giving yourself too much insulin so that there's too much of it for the food you want to eat.

Should have added, are you counting carbs, or has your DSN put you on fixed doses? If you are on fixed doses because carb counting hasn't been explained to you yet, maybe give your DSN a call and see what is suggested.

Hi Robin I'm on basal bolus regime. Been carb counting and did a naughty for dinner and got chips and mushy peas from local chippy last night. Used carbs and Cals book to work out insulin. For the amount of chips I should have given 30u (which seems like a lot!) but only gave 20u to err on side of caution so I think that's why I'm even more confused. I suppose in time it will make more sense. Just trial and error to a certain extent I guess

Ah - now! - I think there's a clue there! yeah yeah, spuds have carbs and so do mushy peas but the peas get there a bit slower even when mushy, cos they're legumes - and they just do! - and the 'skins' of peas and beans are 100% fibre which slows the carbs down some more. But the spuds are carbs ..... yes they are - but the FAT slows em down! Any meal with fat (more than a bit) isn't absorbed as quick as eg had the spud been boiled. It's known in the diabetic world as the Pizza Effect - yeah that's a great slab of bread alright - but with shedloads of cheese and greasy meat eg pepperoni, slowing the carbs down from the bread dough, even more.

It's the sort of meal that typically needs a split bolus, but that's something that's slightly different for all of us. On basal bolus same as you - I'd have about half the bolus upfront as usual and I'd be fine for hours - then a spike would occur FIVE hours later! I therefore gave up eating pizza at night, cos 5 hours after dinner - I'll be in bed.

I get a similar effect with anything with chips really, so I have to limit the chips. The really ancient way of counting chips was - using old potatoes so they were 'decent sized' chips - 7 chips = 10g. Obviously with smaller spuds like right now, you get more to the 10g. However, a 'normal' sized portion from our chippy equates to approx 200g carb, without whatever you have with it. Ridiculously huge! I can eat approx one quarter of that, and even a cone of em is too many.

Not the easiest meal for any of us to deal with.
