Hypo-busting tips

When I feel the need to wake up at 2 o'clock in the a.m, my hypo cure is a few biscuits, 5.6 g/c each, so 3 normally does it.

I always keep lucozade by the bed for that purpose. A couple of decent swigs (even at the new weaker formulation!) provides the recommended 15g of Carbs for the ‘15 rule’ 🙂

I find it really hard to swig fizzy drinks and I'm more likely to choke on them, especially if hypo.
I keep my Dextrose tablets for hypos under 3 and jelly babies or jelly beans above 3 and hit it with an extra Dextrose tablet if it doesn't respond to the sweets in an appropriate time scale. Jelly babies are a lot cheaper than Dextrose tablets!
I am very wary of over treating a hypo so I am quite reserved about how much I take. I don't seem to get that insatiable need to eat everything in sight like some people do. My sister finds it quite amazing that I can have just 2 or 3 jelly babies to push my BG up and then put them away, when pre diagnosis, I would have eaten the whole packet once I opened them, without pausing for breath.... now I very much think of them as medication and try to take the absolute minimum necessary. My whole mind set towards sweets has changed and I view them as an occasional necessary evil.

I am sometimes naughty when my hypo is above 3 and I have 3 prunes instead of sweets as this is my preference, but I am aware that the fibre can mean they are not as quick acting, so I am not recommending them. I don't carry them around with me, so only an option when I am at home and I do really enjoy them.

I can’t have JBs in the house as they would only last about ten minutes if they are lucky .

When hypo I follow up my finger pricks with a scan to see the direction of travel , I know there is a delay , but if I am above 3 and Libre arrow shows a slanted or straight up arrow I will hold off treatment till the next test . I also set the timer to remind me to test .

I learned about the cheeks absorbing glucose on here some time back , I told my DN about it .

On the basis of a good chew makes JBs work better, would the same work for the prunes, getting the sugar out and then swallowing the fibre?

I rely on the retest prompt on my meter. The 15 minutes always seems to take ages, especially if I want to get on with things, but I have learnt that if I try to keep going it just doesn’t work.

At home a few games of spider work well as a distraction, and seem to take a lot longer with hypo brain!

I am a jelly baby person, although now having Alice as well, I find she eats all the nice ones! Sadly we both dislike the green ones. I am trying to make sure she always has tangfastics as she prefers these and she can keep her hands off my little babies. The local shop keeps running out of both, so we have had to branch out to whatever sweets they have. I also have full fat coke if I feel I am dropping quickly.

What madness is this @stephknits 😱 Green jelly babies are the best, along with the black ones *drool* I’ll swap your greens for my oranges:D

For the Dextro tablets, I usually watch out for offers and buy up a few packs, or get a whole box on Amazon. That works out at good value @rebrascora They last ages.

Oranges are my favourites!

@SB2015
Whilst I was aware that absorption occurred in the mouth I didn't realise that it was the most effective area so whilst I did give them a good chew.... because I really like prunes but don't generally have them at other times being high carb..... I was also assuming that I needed to swallow them to get most of the sugar out, so next time I will spend a lot more time chewing and enjoying and see what happens.... As I said, I only use them with minor hypos, when I am at home so not a great risk to experiment with this idea.
Thanks for the great suggestion

I keep flat Lucozade by the bed- I let the bubbles out when I buy it then know I won't be battling to unscrew a sealed top in the night, I can't stand the fizzy feel when my bg is low.
'Fun Size'!! packets of Skittles are my carry everywhere treatment as they're just enough carbs to raise my bg for a 3.x hypo and I really don't like them enough to eat more than I need. The packets are quite hardy for living in a bag for months.

Flower - that's what I do! Fizz is most unpleasant and hurts my throat to swallow when I'm hypo.

Plus - yes orange - Lucozade as well as any fruity sweets. Last place I worked our Director used to say he only liked the green JBs! probably because he could pretty much guarantee being able to get a few, as so many people seem to hate them. I don't hate them at all, though like the red ones I can take them or leave them. Perhaps it's because you absolutely couldn't pick and choose when I was little, sweet rationing !

Fun size skittles (17g per bag), along with Drumstick Squashies minibags (11g per bag) are my current choices too Flower.

I used Fruit Pastilles for years, but then they changed the formulation, and they became disastrous if in a pocket for more than a few hours.

I channeled my indignation into this:
