Hypo before a meal

If i'm hypo immediately before a meal am i supposed to treat the hypo with the usual (jelly babies & cereal bar 🙂) & delay my meal which if it's a hot one would end up going cold 😡?

Hi Gill, I would treat with jelly babies as usual and then retest 10 mins later and then eat. Don't bother with the cereal bar, just eat your dinner instead. If you are worried, you could try eating a bit of your food before injecting if you are on a fast acting insulin

It would depend on the hypo - if it was a mild one above 3.5 then I'd probably just have one jelly baby then eat my meal as normal - something below 3 I would have three jelly babies then wait 10 minutes to make sure my levels were coming up, then eat my meal 🙂

Gotta agree with the others.🙂

To add a note to HRH's (@Robster65, incase someone else has posted :D) post above :D We steer well clear of cereal bars at all costs!

Hypos = A mini can of coke if less than 3. Jelly babies above 3 mmol/l & then the number of those depends on time of hypo, activity before hypo etc...

Cereal bars are ok imo if your out walking and got some miles to go.

Obviously everyones different 🙂

Sarah

Also keep in mind if it's a pre-meal hypo your previous bolus dose should be exhausted so the likelihood of falling again after treating is low. Above 3.5 I take 2 jelly b's then eat and inject afterwards.

Was just going to say Ragnar Hanas says inject after meal if hypo at mealtime and on Rapid acting insulin.:D

Do you all eat jelly babies?I only use lucozade:confused:

I've tried lucozade but I'm never sure how much to have without overtreating, so I go with the safe, constant number of jelly babies - more portable as well, and a lot cheaper! I only have sugary drinks if my levels are very low and I don't think the JBs will bring my levels up again quickly enough 🙂

i believe you only need 90ml might have got that bit wrong but a shot sized glass or a small mouthful

Yes, I agree, Lucozade is much faster acting than anything else for me too - I measured out how much once, in the glasses I've got so I know exactly how much to take. Not useful when you're out, when I take glucotabs, or better still lucozade tablets, followed by a high fibre cereal bar as the long acting carb afterwards.

Am I the only one who doesn't like jelly babies??
