Relationship to Diabetes
My husband is type2 diabetic and isn't the best at managing it. He never checks his levels and will not stop smoking. I have begged him to stop.

When he visits the diabetes nurse it seems like its just a chat about his meds and how he has been.

I cannot get through to him how serious this condition is and how we need him to stop smoking.

At my wits end. I dont know how to get through to him.

Welcome Eliza, it is often difficult to change habits, and to recognise the long term impact of Diabetes, however much a person is told. Is your husband aware of the long term implications of his condition? Have you been able to discuss these with him? There is a lot of information available on the DUK website about the long term impact. It may be that seeing the information in different formats would have an impact.

Would your husband consider you joining him at his next Diabetes review. This could give you a chance to understand the purpose of these meetings and ask pertinent questions.

Hi @Eliza33 and welcome. I don't know how you can get your husband to stop smoking. I smoked many, many years ago and stopped when I wanted to. I set a date, a few weeks in the future, to stop and started looking forward to it. I used patches but not sure how much they helped. He just has to want to stop and he will.

Do you do most of the cooking/meal planning? If so at least you can help him make better food choices. You are right about this being a serious condition and the best thing he could do is test his BG levels to see what effect different food has on him. If he refuses maybe try to get him to reduce his carb intake little by little, so he hardly notices. One of the best swaps I have found is cauliflower rice instead of "normal" rice. It's much tastier and so easy to make, especially now most supermarkets stock it ready riced. I know I could grate it myself but I just find it more convenient to buy it ready done. There are lots of ideas on the food and carbs section.

Good luck!

Hi @Eliza33
Welcome from another Type 2
Has he tried Vaping as an substiute to smoking? It does work and worth a try and becoming more popular now. I vape when I am in the UK and to be honest I have the odd smoke or two when I am in Shanghai. Everyone smokes it is difficult not to and I am now 67 and smoked since 15 so it was and it extremely difficult to stop but vaping is an excellent alternative.
As @Jeandp states, he needs to check and test his BG levels it is a good guide.
@SB2015 's advice is also very pertinent, join him at his meetings.
It is amazing what you can eat on a Low Carb diet and I also use cauliflower rice when home. I eat lots of meat of all kinds, fish, cheese, eggs, and I still have regular fry ups. It realy isn't so bad and the benefits are too many to recount.
I managed through a Low Carb diet to get off meds within 3 months so it can be done.
Step by step, each day at a time and he will soon feel the benefits.
Good luck and please keep us updated.

😉😉😉😉😉🙂Hi Eliza
Fact, you absolutely can not stop him smoking! The nurses and doctors can not stop him smoking! The only person that can stop him, is himself, to do that he has to want to. I used to be a die hard 40 a day girl, never thought I would ever want, never mind succeed in giving up, I just wasn’t interested!! I won’t bore you with the details of what happened but needless to say I gave up through vaping. The more you push him, the more he will push back. As Jeandp has said, you can do so much to help him through the food you cook, show him that there are so many nice things you can eat. Suggest places you might go together for a walk, short walks have made a huge difference to my blood glucose levels but also to my state of mind. You never know, he may make that decision himself one day. Good luck 😉
