Has anyone else noticed any ADR since they changed the packaging of Humulin S. I have felt very unwell for a few months and was trying to decide what it was and I noticed it started at the time the packaging on Humulin S changed. My Oesophagus and stomach have been inflamed and at times it is difficult to swallow This has been going on for several months and I am now totally fed up feeling ill. I have been a diabetic for nearly 50 years and have changed insulins loads of times and didn't have a problem until I tried Analogues, I had a sever reaction to Analogue insulins, which is why I went onto Humulin S and Insulatard. This morning as a last resort I took an antihistamine tablet before taking my insulin and 'miracle' I feel a lot better and the inflammation seems to have subsided a lot. I would like to know I am not the only one and also if there is a more permanent solution to this. A life on antihistamine doesn't sound ideal.

I have been taking Humulin S for the past 32 years. I did notice the change in packaging some months ago but do not find the actual insulin any different to what it has always been. There are no changes listed in the notes that come in the box with the insulin. As far as I am able to establish the product appears to have nothing extra or removed from it. This is very curious. I would be extremely interested if you could let me know if you find anything out 🙂

Hi Alison. Perhaps have a chat with your pharmacist , they might know if anything has been changed, they should certainly know how to find out. It's also possible you've developed an allergy even if nothing has changed.
I hope you can get this sorted out soon.

Perhaps go back to animal insulin? Hope you feel better soon.

Thank you. I am hoping Lilly Industries will be able to throw some light on it. If so I will let you know. I was also taking Lestrin for two weeks (plant sterol) as I can't take statins and stopped as that was making feel really rough and it started around that time. I wondered if that had triggered something. But I haven't taken it for about two months now. So frustrating as I usually keep so well and never have problems with it.

A good idea thank you. I hadn't thought of that.

It's the plant sterols that caused your heartburn, it's one of the commonest side effects, and they are the likely source of any allergy symptoms. It's probably best to discuss this with your GP, you may need specific treatment to switch the symptoms off. Heartburn particularly, once started, tends to persist. I'd be surprised if it turned out to be the insulin, because that is the only thing that hasn't changed in your medication.

Many thanks Mikey. If it persists I will talk to the GP. Thanks for the advice
