I wondered if anyone had seen this. This week they featured a lady who was diabetic and she reduced her hba1c in 12 weeks from a diabetic level to 39.

She was put on the 800 calorie diet which they said new research had found to be effective. The only thing I found slightly disappointing was that, when the Nutritionist was advising her on what to eat, there was shredded wheat, jacket potatoes and pasta (not altogether, of course). I had a feeling they would plug the "carbs" bit again.

I think its because the newcastle diet uses a hefty whack of carbs in the shakes. I dont know why, maybe because the original research was done to work for reducing a fatty liver, so carbs were not an issue.
Prof taylor has new work due in December, so very keen to see that.

I watch that. I saw the one where a lady and a man were given their body age as opposed to their real age, one of them was ninety! 😱 I don't remember a diabetic, I might be a programme behind, must check the recorded progs...thanks for the heads-up.

I actually was on both programs in background. Angela Rippon was very interested in my Insulin Pump but producers wanted to see T2 people. 51yrs of T1 & brilliant BMR does not sell papers. Good prog though & worth a watch

Showed two T2 s who did very well 😉. Too much sugar does lots of damage to skin & whole body.

Should be interesting to see what is said. 😉

Yes, I did. The woman did well, but surely Angela Rippon was wrong to tell her that she was no longer a diabetic? She achieved her results by limiting her diet to 800 calories a day, and they didn't say that if she went back to her old ways she'd be in the same boat as before...? Also, they didn't mention testing or anything about carbs.

My diet at Newcastle Uni was eat what I wanted, including local delicacies such as stotties and peas pudding. I couldn't face Newcastle Brown Ale, due to the smell from the brewery that I cycled past on way to lectures & lab sessions. Using up lots of calories in cycling, fell walking, nordic skiing and Territorial Army activities including lots of carrying and erecting big & heavy tents, setting up kit, running, PT etc, meant I could eat lots - TA weekends, usually ended with excellent curries, thanks to our excellent cooks and an Indian born commanding officer.
I realise that's not the 800 calorie per day being discussed above.

I think they said she was no longer diabetic as her hba1c was 39 which is a non diabetic, non pre-diabetic reading. However, I thought it was a mistake to say she was no longer diabetic as I thought you had to have 4 consecutive normal hba1cs. My Dad in Law's neighbour is diabetic and she has got her hba1c to normal levels but her GP has told her she is "diabetic." She thought he would say she was not but he told her that she is showing better control and cannot say non diabetic.

I would like to have my body age checked like that as I would be hopeless with that grip test. I have no strength in my upper arms at all, probably due to working on computers most of my life. I would probably be "off the scale."

That lady got right on my nerves with her having something sweet everyday, gateau's and stuff, yet knowing she's a Type 2. I wanted to shake her. I have no patience! I think they're right though about the low cal diet as when I did SlimFast my levels dropped immediately. I just couldn't keep it up, wanted to gnaw my own arm off. I looked out for you Hobie, which one was you? Did they do the age test on you? I'd luv to have all that done, for interest sake.

How do you think I feel Ditto ? No mention of a T1 for more than 51yrs & only beaten by a 31yr old fitness bloke on the BMR test. The producers are the same as Newspaper reporters 😱, I think I knocked there figures well out of the studio ? They wanted to shock people not help people & encourage kids etc. 😉

I think Type 2's are just in the news at the minute, we sell newspapers and 'make-over' programmes. 🙂
