Relationship to Diabetes

Cholesterol has been a big topic on the medical scene in recent years and has now permeated down to the general public who are being encouraged to become more aware of their cholesterol levels and how to keep them healthy. As a Type 1 diabetic I am regularly monitored for my cholesterol levels, and was interested to learn the full story about how best to control it, and the possible dangers a high level might pose to my health. This book provides all you could need to know – how it affects you, how it is manufactured in the body, what is good and bad about it, and how to maintain a healthy levels through simple dietary and lifestyle changes. It is a relatively short book, but extremely well written and informative – I do not think there was a single paragraph that did not convey new and useful knowledge in a clear, well constructed and simple to understand way. Dr Povey builds from basics, reiterating key points throughout the book, summarising concisely the steps you need to take to achieve healthy, desirable levels in order to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, atherosclerosis and stroke. To complete the book, there are some sample recipes and a useful glossary of terms. Definitely worth buying, and a small price to pay for understanding that may help you to live a long and healthy life!🙂

What's Dr Povey's approach - reducing fat in the diet or reducing refined carbohydrates - or both possibly?

Essentially, moderation in everything but excluding as much saturated and transfats as possible. It's not directed at diabetics specifically, rather at reducing one of the risk factors for coronary heart disease. He also explains the other risk factors and includes information about genetic links to high cholesterol alongside environmental issues, and discusses various studies including the Framingham Heart Study (the one that Flora base their 'heart age' quiz on).

I wouldn't necessarily follow all his recommendations, but it's a very useful explanation of blood fats for the uninitiated!🙂

He doesn't go down Dr Charles Clark's line then - i.e. that it is refined carbohydrates that cause the body to produce too much cholesterol that is the main problem?

If he addresses that approach then I'd certainly be interested to buy and read the book because I'm coming towards the conclusion that is the main problem.

No wally, not particularly - I would say that he concentrates more on the sat-fats. I'm just off to read the Great Cholesterol Con now, which has just dropped through my letterbox! Watch this space for a review!🙂

Found the book in our local library yesterday and read it last night. Yes - well written an a good read - but sticks to the usual eat a low-fat diet approach. The book never touches on the effect of carbohydrate intake stimulating the body to produce cholesterol. I'd have liked to have read something about that further to what I have read in Dr Charles Clark's book "Diabetes Revolution".

I've found it a useful background read now that I'm reading 'The Great Cholesterol Con', wally. I'm now familiar with the terminology and the GCC expands on the biological and chemical processes. I think by reading both books I will have a good and fair comparison of the two schools of thought.

It's incredibly difficult for the layman to know who to trust in these things. Just from reading the first few chapters of the GCC I'm starting to question why the doctors regarded my 'cholesterol level' of 2.4 mmol/l as 'one of the best they've ever seen'. Maybe one of the lowest, but not necessarily, it may seem, the best for my overall health!😱

Wow northe, you read so many books 🙂

I think I might check out the library later and see if they have any of these, thanks!
