There isn't a set amount of carbs to have really, much will depend upon your own response to each 10g portion, so only by testing your blood glucose before and after eating will you be able to tell what effects those carbs have on your levels. Insulin users as a rule can tolerate more carbs per meal, but type 2's who are on meds may find they cannot tolerate a higher carb meal and may have to reduce the amount of carbs they eat at each meal. So, my advice is to test, eat, test again and make alterations according to your blood glucose readings.

Good advice, so long as you have a meter and have been prescribed test strips.

I found that recording what I ate on a daily basis for a month or two, testing each day (at different times each day) gave me the knowledge I needed to establish a diet suitable for my needs.

If you're not being prescribed any test strips, then I suggest that you try and persuade your GP to do so for a period of time whilst you work out your diet. Telling him/her your plan of action may help in that process and show that you are serious!
