How much a rise is a 'spike'?

My testing guide I got from DUK gives the target BG levels to aim for before meals and 2 hours after eating. What should be happening an hour after?

Example - this morning I woke to 4.7. I had a slice of Burgen toasted for breakfast and an hour afterwards my BG was 7.8. My 2-hour reading was 5.2.

Was the 7.8 an indication that I should be careful with bread or avoid it completely, at least for a bit longer? Is that kind of one-hour rise anything like 'acceptable' or is it too high?

That's a really good question and I'm not sure what the answer is. For me, a spike is anything above the upper limit my DSN set for me, that is anything over 9.0. The speed of the rise may have something to do with it too. Hopefully one of our resident experts will be along soon to tell us.

Well I wouldn't class that as a spike myself, it's just about 3.0 and I think that's OK. I mean it would be great if it was less of course - but realistically I don't think it's at all bad.

Can I ask what you had on the toast? Cos fat slows carb down, so for instance if you only put a scrape of butter on it, try a bit more next time! Maybe your pancreas would iron out the 'little bump' even more!

Thanks for a good suggestion. I think I'll try using a bit more butter tomorrow. In the interests of diet research, of course! 😉

I'm not planning on having bread every day but just once in a while I'd like a slice of toast.

I wouldn't consider it a spike Carmina, although it does go to show how things that are supposedly 'diabetes friendly' like Burgen can still give you a bit of a rise within an hour. What may also be coming into play is the fact that insulin resistance tends to be higher in the mornings, and your liver will also be releasing higher amounts of glucose as you start the day. I think it is an acceptable rise, but you might like to compare with less carby breakfasts. I have a slice of Burgen toast every morning and get similar post-meal levels, but would only worry if I was reaching the 9s or above. 🙂
