Relationship to Diabetes
So, how many carbs on average do you have each day? I think the RDA for those without diabetes is around 260g?
And if you went over YOUR limit would you start feel differently, side-effects, symptoms etc?

Ideally I'd like to do Atkins Induction so I can lose some weight so I'd be aiming for 20 carbs a day short term. I go over limited daily due to food addiction but the only symptoms I have are acid reflux which is horrendous. Self inflicted so I can't complain about it.

I have about 50 gm per day as a maximum.
I have been diagnosed over a year now, and in normal ranges for 6 months, so I do have considerable leeway with blood glucose levels but to go on losing weight I need to keep below 50gm. I am over 3 stone down now. I don't have foods which take me up to 8mmol/l after meals, so can't advise on what symptoms I might have.

I try and keep mine Drummer to around 75gr/day.
Don't always achieve it but that is my norm.
My levels are between 4 and 6 with occasional ups above 6 below 7
Twice I exceeded that once at 7.1 and once last week when I ate a BK Aberdeen Angus burger it hit 8.2 but was down to 4.4 about 1 hour later.

I was going to ask this today as I was wondering the same. I posted how I was always hungry when I started cutting carbs last week. I started at about 100g a day and considering I was at about 300g a day I thought this was a big deal lol. I had a lot to learn!! Got some great support on here though, lots of members advising me on how I could fill up on protein. Still struggling with hunger a bit but definitely not as bad as when I started last week. I think I have my carbs down to 40-60g a day now and that's with saving myself a slice of bread with peanut butter as a treat before I go to bed.

Takes a while Jackie for your body to adjust. Took me a couple of weeks when I did cold turkey on carbs. I don't snack now and focus on high protein and don't worry about fats. Fats help fill you up but important to exercise. 30 miinutes brisk walk 3 or 4 times per week is a good start. Can commence at 10 minutes then build up.
40-60gr from 300 is a great achievement. I shudder to think how many I was eating before I had my diagnosis. Probably way in excess of 300.
I found drinking water helps stem off hunger pangs.

Thanks Vince, don't want to hijack this post and make it all about me but hopefully my experiences will help hopingandwinning. I walk most of the day at work, ok it's not briskly but it can be non stop for a couple of hours at a time. I have got lazier and lazier over the last year when at home though, I'm sure with some weight off and not feeling ill and lethargic all the time I will get back to being my old sociable self again. I was so happy to discover I could still eat some fat, the thought of bacon with no fat on was enough to make me not want it 🙂 I found my sweet craving can be stemmed with a zero carb, zero sugar cordial. If I don't get my sweet fix it makes me miserable and that's all I think about, somehow fruit or yogurt just doesn't do it for me although I do eat them. Thank you for you positivity, I am so pleased I found this group, it has made me feel that nothing is too ridiculous to ask.

Jackie, nothing is to ridiculous to ask. You have a question or concern , just ask. You will find everyone on here are non-judgemental and willingly support.
Like you I was amazed at what I could eat and most of the things I love. Meat, fish, eggs, cheese and on. Dampens the blow of the diagnosis, well it certainly did for me. Hang on in there life is good.

I tend to aim slightly higher than most, I stick to between 100-150g of carbs a day, I know some people see this is high but its what I know I can stick to in the long term.

Me too.
Having initially went very strict and could not maintain long term. Result is more stable weight over the last 4-5 years.

I'm on about 100-150g per day, although I am on insulin so could eat more if I wanted. I think I'd struggle to eat the RDA though, would feel totally overfaced! Unless it was a pizza, perhaps! 😱 Even on insulin, going too carb-heavy makes doses less predictable, so best to keep it 'moderate' 🙂 I don't feel at all deprived, and I'd actually question the 260g RDA as being excessive for anyone, diabetic or not! 🙂

Vince UK your levels are very good, at virtually non-diabetic levels.
I've looked up that burger you had which made you spike at 8.2 and it has only 5.7 carbs, is that right?

I had the bun not just the Burger hoping, had the whole thing.

I’m averaging around 150-175g a day at the moment but I’m pregnant. Normally I’m closer to 80-120g I’d imagine but sometimes like to go lower.

As @Northerner said - the more carbs I eat I find it harder to control levels and stop spikes etc.

Checked checked hoping, the Angus Classic is 42.1gr the Texas one included onion pieces etc. and the bun is larger.
A double whopper is 51.9gr
5.7 maybe is just the meat pate itself.

Vince is in China, are the recipes the same? LOL - just seen his reply, surprise surprise at the 'cost' of the bun! I do that - correlate carbs with money - it's an expensive meal or a cheap one! LOL All burger buns are FAR too dear!

My normal pre diabetic diet was 100g carb a day. It was that because if I ate any more other than occasionally I very soon put weight on, and no I hadn't ever measured any element of what I ate in a day before being diagnosed - no helpful food labelling in those days! But anyway - diet was declared 'properly balanced' by the hospital honchos and that's been that ever since.

If I eat more - I put weight on - I don't have a huge frame, and it just makes me miserable. Been a bit piggy the last couple of months (off my feet with a broken kneecap) and haven't actually dared get on the scales - bit difficult with half your weight on crutches, good excuse so I'm sticking to it! - but bet they'll confirm bad news.

That's a very good number then after having quite a bit of carb. Would you say then you are still diabetic if you can maintain what are essentially non-diabetic levels?

I do take 500mg Metformin every morning so that will have some effect. When I get back in December I intend to have a discussion with my GP. I feel my diagnosis was flawed the way the test was done. I want to come off Metformin and then continue to test and see the results. I have lost 2 stone in weight since the diagnosis on Sept 28th so all of this will have had some part to play I feel.
Until proven otherwise, to answer your question hoping, I will consider myself diabetic.
However, if the results show I am not I have had a bitter lesson and will continue my current "new" lifestyle.
I feel $1M
