Hello,
I am new to this site and am enjoying browsing around.

I have a question that I should know the answer to as I have been a type 2 diabetic for 11 years now.

What is the approximate daily carbohydrate allowance?

I have read that some people have lost weight by reducing carbs and I have no idea how many I eat but know that I am about 1 1/2 stones overweight. I should mention that I was only 1/2 stone overweight until the doctors put me on gliclazide after over 10 years on just metformin.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Hi Sarah Jane, welcome to the forum 🙂 There is no single answer to your question as the amount of carbohydrate you consume will be whatever you can happily tolerate to keep your blood sugar levels stable and in range. I believe the 'recommended daily amount' for non-diabetics is 230g per day, but some very low carb people can go down to 30-50g a day only. The best thing to do would be to start a food diary where you record everything you eat, listing carbs, protein and fat, and review it after a week or two to see just how much you are consuming now and where there might be areas where you could cut down or substitute lower GI (Glycaemic Index) foods for any high ones you currently eat.
