You can ask for the referral at the gp and keep chasing it up by making a fuss.
My lad had to do this as he hadn't been seen in 18 months as they kept cancelling so his girlfriend had enough and took the bull by the horns so to speak.
T1s are usually the hospital
T2s are usually the gps and PN
The latter I hate because I feel they haven't got a clue on bg numbers and diet. I got 2 booklets and a card and told to join here. Thank goodness I did as I didn't have a clue at all. I then started to make a fuss over my care.
Its been 20 months since I was diagnosed as type 2 at first. I originally asked to be referred last October as they believe I am MODY, I am very rarely in single figures and my weekly average comes in at about 11 at the mo. I struggled to get referred but my gp finally done it in February, 18 months after initial diagnosis. I just hope the hospital team can help me out when I ser them next month.
Well as I say I will push on the DSN on the 18th and see what they say, I'm never really near the GP, I'm at the surgery every 3 months for an injection but that only requires a trained nurse, Stitch that appointment cant come soon enough for you and as you know we are all wishing you the best of luck for it, its just a shame they have taken so long to do anything about it x
I was at the doctor's for another reason and got a 'oh by the way you're diabetic!' from the GP who handed me a meter (with no instructions). I was devastated on top of everything else and rather ashamed of myself. I burst into tears but he continued fixing his printer. That was it really except I did get testing strips and an annual review (but not with a specialist nurse).
He never mentions diabetes when I see him and that's the truth. He did smile wryly when I got my Hba1c result however.
I told my doctor he was a cynical old bugger yesterday. It's not an approach I'd recommend for yours Stitch but he seems to enjoy the friendly abuse! Lol

I was dx in July 2008. I met my endo, Dr Boots, while I was in the hozzie and had daily diabetes education sessions with my DSN, Alvarina, while I was in there. I had a follow-up appt with them both a week later, then a month later, then 3 or 4 times during my first year as a diabetic. So, no complaints here!😛 I hope your appt comes thru soon, Kaylz.🙂
Good luck with that appt in May, Stitch. You deserve the best!
I was admitted to hospital with high blood sugar and put on a drip I met my consultant there. I was seen by my gp a week after and then saw my consultant a month after i left hospital. I continued to visit my gp monthly until I saw my consultant again after six months .... Reading every ones comments it sounds like I have been lucky with my care x
Am I right in assuming that only type 1 see a consultant. I don't believe I've been referred at all. I had diagnosis, 3 month review then offered a 12 month review. I asked for a 6 month review.
I fought for over a year to get the correct diagnosis. I was refused blood tests, refused referrals to hospital or consultant. I ended up in hospital in August, they admitted me and saw a consultant the next day as he started me on insulin asap. I saw him again in November, February and just got an appointment for beginning of May. So it's been every three months. However, I think that's only because of the absolute **** poor (scuse my French) care I had in the community.
I have been lucky enough to see my consultant 3 times over the past 2 years, with another appointment that just came through today set for June, but in all honesty the DSN is a lot more useful, informative and appears to give a damn. My consultant basically looks over my records, asks for some blood tests there and then (only finger pricks). He then basically says... "hmm, well your HbA1c is ... and you don't have ketones so that's good... but your bloods are high and your HBa1c is scary, make sure you medicate ok?... see you next time"
From what I am lead to believe they are the ones with the power to say... right let's get you in ot see the podiatrist asap or ok you need to go see a eye doc, i'll get the appointment sorted.
