Being very new to this, I have been recording my blood levels but don't really know how they are... Today for instance , on waking 7.7, after lunch 6.9 and after evening meal 9.9, is this OK?
Haven't really got a clue, Thankyou

It depends what they were before your meals, dawny - for example, if before lunch you were say, 5.9, then that would be a rise of only 1, which is fine. The best thing is to test immediately before your meal, then two hours after (or you can do one hour as well) to see how it spikes. It takes a while to find out which foods spike you and which don't, so don't worry, you'll soon get the hang of it 🙂

Some of those readings are a bit high, Dawny, but not worryingly so. You are aiming to be between about 4-7 before meals and below 8.5 after meals. I'd have a think about what you had for your evening meal that might have made you go up to 9.9, because that's higher than you really want to go (though most of us will have the odd reading that high now and again, you just want to avoid going up that high too often).

There's more info. about the numbers here - https://www.diabetes.org.uk/Guide-to-diabetes/Managing-your-diabetes/Testing/ - scroll down to see the ideal levels for type 2s.

I decided to try to keep my levels below 7 if I could, by eliminating high carb foods.
Once I kept to 8 I found that my numbers went down week by week, eating the same things. Now I am usually about 7 or less after eating.

Had a reading of 10.3 this afternoon and I'm sure its bread, perhaps I would be best to give it up totally? Funny thing is I was never a big bread eater ! I don't have big amounts now but whenever I have some it seems to send it high !

I found a long time ago - bread, just can't tolerate it - although some can.

It is trial and error

Is it white bread dawn? If so it's awful for me a real blood sugar riser. Alot of us have burgen bread I can tolerate that

I found keeping a food diary helped me work out what spikes me. For example oats are a no no. We are all different and so have to work this out. You have made a good start and will get there if you persevere. Lots of people seem to like the Bergen soya and linseed bread, I prefer the livlife which is high protein but low carb. It is more expensive but as I don't eat a lot of bread that is OK. I keep it in the fridge and it lasts for about two weeks. Good luck with it and keep asking questions, we are all in this together and learning about things to try 🙂

Thing is, when it's part of your staple diet it is really difficult.

No spuds or bread I find impossible. I do all the cooking and I'm utterly lost as to how to replace those things. What do you put on the damn plate ?
I cooked roasties yesterday and could not eat them myself, so I had a very odd Sunday dinner and still got a high reading !

Good eh ??

I am lucky (sort of) and can tolerate a small amount of potato, as long as its not mashed, so I can still have a couple of roasties with my sunday roast.

I don't miss the high carb foods I just can't eat and keep levels down.
I had roast chicken mushrooms and cauliflower yesterday - I cooked potatoes for my husband, but did not feel inclined to eat even one of them.

I'm gonna have to give up the bread too. It's so handy to put stuff on! :(

When we have a roast, i have meat , no potatoes and a variety of veg, eg, cauli, broc, peas, carrots, runner beans and yes i would have them all my plate is bulging, i admit im a pig but these dont affect my BG nd then i dont pick, i only have my meals no snacks

I'll start tomorrow :D because the loaf is finished...
Why don't you just try a lower carb bread? such as Hovis Nimble, it's 22g weight per slice and only 8.1g carbs x

I'd eat the loaf, it's all or nothing with me. Once I'm on the Atkins I'm okay, but I keep sabotaging myself. I'm back on it tomorrow and with all these people watching me I'd best keep to it. :D If I'd been a patient of Dr A back in the day he'd have wiped the floor with me. There's a story of a lady waiting to go in to see him and he was loudly berating somebody so she was expecting a chubster to waddle out but out came a svelte lady! 😱

I've hijacked somebody's thread again haven't I? All me me me :D Apologies.
