How do steroids like prednisone affect diabetes?

Steroids can make the liver less sensitive to insulin because they cause it to carry on releasing sugar, even if the pancreas is also releasing insulin. This continued release of sugar triggers the pancreas to stop producing the hormone.

If this process continues, it causes insulin resistance. The cells no longer respond to insulin, regardless of whether the body produces it or a person injects it to control diabetes.

@MilieWolf A short term dose adjustment of diabetes meds? It looks like you have pre-diabetes from your avatar, so I presume you’re not yet on any medication for the diabetes? Can you explain a little more about your situation if you’re happy to do so?

I went on steroids for a fortnight in October and my blood sugar raised a bit. I had an hba1c of 64 in July and 51 at end of September. My hba1c was 44 in December. I had an eye operation and had 14 days of prednisone. I had a further eye operation at the start of March and further two week course. My DN said not to test. I decided this time not to test as I thought it would stress me. I ate some things I shouldn't but kept to 80 percent or more of sensible eating. I am still using steroid eyedrops but assume they have minimal effect.
