Good morning - my reading on waking has averaged 8.7 over the last three months. It used to be in the 6s and 7s and I had an hba1c of 39 - very good. I have slipped in my regime over these last 6 months or so - put some weight back on, eating a lot of the wrong stuff and not walking as regularly. No real reason - maybe just finding it harder as time goes on. My GP said that might happen - very encouraging! I really wanted to prove him wrong and I did for over a year - but seem to have become one of the many who start to slide. I really want to get back on track - will have to find some determination in the New Year. I am due another hba1c at the end of December and not sure if to have it and face the damage or postpone it and try and get back on track first. I haven't slipped all the way back as my level was 20 when diagnosed - hba1c 102. So how bad is 8.7? I don't want them to give me more meds. Any advice/motivation would be gratefull received - thanks guys x

Hi Kathy, it is higher than you'd want it to be, especially if it's an average and not just an occasionally high waking reading, so you do need to try and get back to where you were. You know the reasons for it, so it's a case of getting back that determination to bring things back under good control 🙂 Why not have another read through Maggie Davey's letter and seeing where you can make little changes? Also, it would be a good idea to start a food diary so you can see exactly what you are consuming, particularly carb-wise - also worth looking to see if there are certain times of the day or evening when perhaps you are snacking a bit more etc. This should help to clarify the situation for you.

I wouldn't postpone the HbA1c - if it has increased then it might help with the determination to get it back to the excellent figure you had before 🙂 You don't have to accept more medication, and the fact that you have already identified areas where you may have slipped means it's not a fundamental decline in your body's ability to deal with things, there are external factors you know can be improved 🙂

Good luck, and remember we are all here to help you get things back on track - you can do it! 🙂
