Hello,
Dr thinks I have corona since Sunday. Am managing okay but strangely, bloods are brilliant. Rarely over 9 and really quite steady in general. I am type one, was diagnosed about 8yrs ago.
Do you think either:

A. I definitely havent got the virus as bloods are behaving
B. It is possible for bloods to behave when ill

Thanks in advance as am really unsure what to think, was all ready with sick day rules and ketone strips!

"Illness and infections, as well as other forms of stress, can raise your blood glucose (sugar) levels. As part of the body’s defence mechanism for fighting illness and infection, more glucose is released into the blood stream. This can happen even if you’re off your food or eating less than usual."

https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/life-with-diabetes/illness

I often see my glucose levels going up 2 or 3 days before I actually feel unwell.
Thanks Benny. So by that, sometimes when you are ill ur bloods are okay? And just raised beforehand?
I can't make sense of what is happening to me

I find it can vary each time I’m ill. Sometimes they go very high, other times moderately raised, and sometimes they stay normal or even randomly go low.

So I’d answer B)

But do test lots and keep an eye on things. Things can change quickly as I’m sure you know. I hope you feel better soon.

Thank you very much for taking the time, I appreciate it and it really helps

I’m another who votes for B.

Sometimes, like @Benny G, I can get a big rise, then days later come down with the lurgy.

Other times I start feeling ill, things are OK, then suddenly go haywire.

Other times I don’t get any effect at all!

Thanks very much for answering. I rang the helpline for advice and they suggested posting on here. Thank you.

Hello @AnnieSA ,

I hope you are feeling well. Please let us know how you are dealing with it. We don't have many people on the forum currently who may have coronavirus and it may be nice to hear from people like you what you experienced.

Hi @Josh DUK, it's been fine.
I have had a headache and sore throat since the first day (Sunday). My temperature kept rising to fever levels (above 37.8). No persistent cough but was breathless on day five. Stayed in bed.
Weirdly and the reason I asked for help which a few people offered, is my blood levels. I asked in another forum about this where more people responded. Strangely, we all had lower or stable levels to begin with. One said their levels rose to sick day levels once they felt better, which has been similar to me. Another reduced basal and stopped bolus for a few meals whilst poorly. Another said they noticed more hypos when normally they run really high when got a virus.
I have alerted my team to this but is obviously worth bearing in mind. Because my symptoms have been mild and my sugars were behaving, I presumed I didn't have it. It now makes sense that as well as having high bloods and following sick day rules, they can also potentially go the other way. Some weird immune response perhaps. Who knows.

@AnnieSA Covid 19 can affect the gut too, so perhaps that accounts for the lows? The pattern of low/normal then rising higher later in the illness is one I’ve experienced with other viruses in the past. I don’t know the reason but when I had that happen last year with a nasty virus, I thought of it as a kind of second stage part of the virus attack. I found resting, even when I felt pretty ok, helped a lot with that.

I hope you continue to improve and are back to normal very soon.

Thanks so much. I didnt even know this could happen but hopefully they will find out why. Someone else said something about covid-19 attacking haemoglobin which might account for it but that's a bit scientific for me!
Thanks again for your help. Will try and get more rest.

My bloods have been all over the place. I’ve just tested them and they’re 11.6 and all I’ve had to eat today is green salad. That’s it. Nothing else. Not even things that don’t count - like broken biscuits or chocolate with the calories shaken out of them.
Then again my temperature has been cycling wildly today too.

I thought my temp would need to be constant but think it can fluctuate too. Keep your fluids up, I know its obvious but it does help.

@ColinUK
Good to see that your sense of humour is unaffected by the virus.
Drinking non sugary fluids (ideally water) at a rate of at least 100mls an hour is one of the instructions in the DAFNE sick day rules. BG above 10 will usually trigger the kidney's to start removing it and means that you will wee more so it is important to keep topping up with fluids to help flush the glucose out.
Look after yourself. We are all rooting for you!

Hopefully you HAVE got it @AnnieSA - and you are just one of the people that only get a very mild illness.

I gather something between 7 and 14 days is an average running time, so you might be nearly half way through?

As others have said @AnnieSA things to do with Diabetes just don’t follow rules.
I am another option B. Sometimes if I get ill My BG knows before I do. Other times it waits for me to start being ill first.

I hope that you are starting to feel better.
