House work

Wots housework? Lol...

Interesting. Not a fan of housework but having come back from a short break with a stinking cold, I spent yesterday in bed, dozed , coughed, sneezed etc etc . Felt better this morning so had two small slices toast with scrambled eggs and my coffee. Needed to change our bed completely, right down to mattress topper, that done , spare duvet brought down from the loft, change pillows as well. Now I feel quite odd. I'm on Metformin only but this has happened before , sorted with usually some diet tonic to drink or water if needed. I don't test, but adding this to my queries when I see DN tomorrow. Cancelled my flu/COVID for yesterday. Anyone any suggestions ? I wonder if I am not consuming enough carbs to cover a task like that? Might explain my lightheadedness and woozy.
I felt like you after covid and flu jab. Although illness can affect bg making you feel off. The lightheaded and woozy feelings could also be due to cardiovascular issues. Maybe worth getting it checked out.

Answer is not to do housework, or do it when you need to reduce your sugars.
Or, as other suggest, a wee snacky. I tend to prefer snacking to reducing insulin cos its more flexible and i like eating

I cancelled my jab as I was not up to it, other half his and he is either felled with it or coming out in sympathy with my cold!!!!! Have had some BP issues of very low readings so GP has reduced one of my tablets. Another question for tomorrow.......not that I am expecting answers.

Yes low BP can definitely make you lightheaded and prone to fainting. I suffered terribly with fainting as a teenager but it was just dismissed as teenage hormones etc. Only found out I had naturally low blood pressure when I went on the pill. It raised my blood pressure to the low end of normal which made life much more comfortable for me. Resting BP still shows as optimal on hubby's BP monitor. I use it to do a sense check if his readings seem odd due to his AF. Just to make sure the monitor is working properly. HCPs here asked if I was or ever had been on blood pressure tablets when I had my well women healthcheck. Shame they didn't check HbA1c at the same time.

5 units fast acting 26 carbs, no half unit pen 10 to 15 minutes

It would definitely be worth asking for a half unit pen to enable you to make smaller adjustments to your doses.

Your bolus ratio is about 1 unit for 5 g of carbs. Are you hypoing at other times or is it just with the housework (which is surprisingly energetic and I definitely need adjustments before tackling). If you are having hypos at other times too you could consider gradually changing your carb ratio. This is where the half unit pen will help too.

Let us know how you get on.

My ratio is 1 unit to every 10 carbs, hospital have suggested 1 to 12, or1to14. Can go lower at work but just have a snack, tonight had 2 units 34 carbs and started to go low, it’s not easy trying to get it right

Are you working out your insulin for the amount of carbs correctly as earlier you said ' 5 units fast acting 26 carbs,' but if your ration is 1 unit for 10g carbs then you would have only needed 3 units insulin at most not 5 units.

The 5 units for 26 carbs was breakfast, that is what hospital told me to take. Rest off day is 1 unit per 10 carbs, sorry for confusion

Ah they may be adding a little extra for Dawn Phenomenon / FOTF?

Insulin doses can be a very imprecise form of ‘maths’, full of exceptions and workarounds!

Hope you can find a method of dose adjustment or snacking (or a combination) that works for you.

Vacuuming in a hurry, particularly trying to get the stairs done, often gets my BG plummeting.

On an insulin pump Incan ‘switch off’ my background insulin, but I often still need a carby something too!

Thank you hopefully soon, every day is so different. Think my problem is I want to be perfect, think finally realised it’s not going to be. I really don’t like the lows, I tend to panic don’t know why but hopefully in time will be more calm. Hospital plesed with me as 77% in range

It took me a long long while to accept that perfection is impossible. I can now confirm that perfection is definitely impossible.

It may be that the hospital has advised the extra in the morning but it sounds like it may be too much if you are hypoing afterwards. As you say though every day is different.

There is so much to take on at the start, but you will be amazed at how quickly your carb knowledge grows. Show me a biscuit and I will tell you the carbs - There was no way I was missing out at long meetings.

Keep juggling, keep asking questions and keep in touch with your team as you build the confidence to make your own changes to doses. It all takes time but it does get easier ( just not perfect)

So pleased that you had a good member of the team at the other end. It is indeed what they are there for, and they should work with you to enable you to build the confidence to change your doses according to the circumstances/BG/carbs/the weather. Keep juggling everything, keep asking questions and be proud of the job you are doing. It is a difficult job and the goalposts keep moving, which is why we will never achieve perfection.
