Has anybody else been bitten by Horse fly ?
My arm swelled and came up with 5 little blisters, itched like mad,
this is day 3
Pharmasist gave me Piriton to take 4 hourly
Rang the Diabetic Nurse yesterday, advised to increase Lantis 2 units.
Blood sugars have risen from a steady 6 _ 7mmol upto 18 - 20 during the day
Lets see what today brings, blisters have gone only slight swelling
Bloods still 17 plus.
Never had my bloods this high in 30 odd years

I was bitten really badly by mosquitos last summer and they got infected so I was given antibiotics to take. It sounds like you may have an infection as your BGs are so high, I would get in touch with your GP surgery straight away. Hope you get sorted soon.

Are you sure the bite isn't infected as a HF bite would not normally have this effect. To answer your question yes have been bitten by horse flies on more than one occasion. The wonders of keeping horses and working on farms it was an occupational hazard :(

I do wonder if it was a horsefly as it's normally one lump like a mosquito bite.

Don't think I have an infection EGGYG. Pumper_Sue all seems to be settling down swelling and blister,
Just the blood sugar staying higher than normal,

That sounds nasty. I react badly to horse fly bites (and mosquitos) and would have a large red lump for a couple of weeks after a bite but no blisters. As your BG is staying high I would treat it like a sick day and look at increasing your bonus as well as your basal until it’s back under control. Your body may just be reacting to the inflammation rather than it being an infected bite but the result seems to be higher BG for you.

Yes Paul - but the increase in BG is 99% certainly telling you that you DO have some infection, inflammation or summat else wrong with your body, cos that's exactly what our BG does when something is up with us! - can happen when you have a cold brewing or eg when we break a bone. Hence, keep a close eye on your BGs until the ruddy thing does die down but if it doesn't very soon, get to the docs and get some antibiotics else it never will - HFs are notorious for this!

The other option is to change your insulin to be double sure it's not a faulty cartridge/pen/vile you are using.

Cripes Paul hope your BG comes down soon, that is not nice.

What ever the reason for the high BG, if it stays up there it will not help your body recover, so you will need to get the levels down.

Have you been taught sick day rules about how to adjust your basal and Bolus Insulin. If not I would talk to the D Nurse again. I am always amazed at just how much extra insulin I need on occasions. But to quote my consultant (was that ‘again’ I heard in the back ground?) “you need whatever you need”. I waste far too much time trying to work out why, rather than accepting my body is giving me a clear message, I have become more resistant to insulin and just need more.

Levels have decreased dramatically today almost a flat green line on my freestyle libre graph,so all is good again
Thanks for all your info🙂🙂
