Horrendous Sore Throat

My son is reporting an horrendous sore throat. Given that he doesn't test AND he won't ever take pain killers, I just wondered what any of you find this would do to your BG levels please?

He does get colds, but never anything else. I know the usual advice of drinking loads and taking painkillers, but didn't know if the D will throw up anything else unexpected? Apart from colds he has never had anything else since diagnosis and he has never in his life report a sore throat. I presume we DON'T dash to the doctors and demand anti-biotics do we? (I don't suppose he would take them even if we did though!)

Just looking for a bit of advice please.

Hi Tina, sorry to hear this. Given his general non-compliance and probable high levels generally I would be very worried about this because an infection for me would push my levels higher so that I would need more insulin to try and keep things under control. There is a danger of DKA, as no doubt you are aware, so he really does need to do some ketone testing if nothing else - presumably he does not want to end up in hospital over a sore throat? Is he taking his lantus and other insulins currently?

Hope he will at least do a couple of ketone tests and that he recovers well.

M3 in the mornings - yes, Novorapid teatime - occasionally, Lantus normally No, BUT as he has been out drinking celebrating his 18th he has taken 2 doses of Lantus in the last 3 or 4 days as bizarrely he thinks this will help him hold his alcohol! (Well after that hospital admission after vomiting with levels off the top of his meter we did say to him that had he have got Lantus on board his levels would have remained lower so I think he is mindful of that and takes his Lantus if he knows he is going out drinking now).

Anyway, thanks for that. Getting him to test for ketones??? Well as he won't test his BG I think that's a big ask but it's good you pointed it out, I wouldn't have necessarily thought of that. Haven't got many strips left partly because I sent half a pack down with his sister yesterday as he is going to stay with her Saturday to Monday so they can go out clubbing together! I will see if I can get him to test anyway, maybe reminding him his levels could rocket being ill and he should test for ketones. I will keep pushing the fluids down him too.

Sorry to hear he has the lurgy Tina, how about some sugar free ice pops?
As he is now 18 has he aplied for his exemption certificate for his prescriptions?

Oh thanks for that reminder Sue. That was on my mind a couple of weeks ago, but unless I write things down, it goes in one ear and out the other. Need to put a prescription request in so must do that too. Thank you. And I will see if I can get any sugar free ice pops. Not sure how easy they will be to get hold of this time of year, but worth a try. I guess I could even make some small ice cubes with sugar free squash in them. That's my job for today then!
