Hi All,

I am going on holiday next week (cannot wait), but this will be the first time I go abroad whilst on Insulin.

I have bought myself a frio wallet, ordered up enough medication to last me whilst away and got a letter from the doctors so I think I am all set.

The question I have is regarding the temperature and time change. I am going to Corfu which is two hours ahead of the UK. I usually take my basal insulin once in the evening and once in the morning (around 7pm and 7am). How do I adjust this whilst on holiday - would I take it at 9pm and 9am local time?

Also with the hot weather I am concerned with more hypos - does anyone alter their dose when they go away to account for this?

Any advise is appreciated

Thanks Emma

Hi Emma. I don’t know what others do but I was told on DAFNE to inject my basal on rising and on retiring, as long as there is more than 7 hours between. I know others who have a set time and if you want to stick to that do it at 9, my only reservation would be you may forget as you will probably have eaten by then and will be too busy enjoying yourself in the many bars and clubs Corfu has to offer! As for the heat, I do hypo if too hot but usually only if I have exerted myself somewhat. Walking especially. I would just recommend you test more if that’s the case. I too am going to Greece next month, Rhodes and Symi. The other saving grace is it won’t be as hot as if we were going July/ August. I love Greece, the people, the culture, the food, the sea, beaches. I can’t wait, 3 weeks today. Yamas!! :D

I was always told bedtime and rising - so that's what I did whatever hour the clock happened to say.

In an hotel, or B&B or S/C and eating out at night - 9 might be when you are still eating breakfast and/or dinner. I honestly wouldn't worry overmuch until you see what is the norm there and what you are actually doing that day/evening.

I fully agree with eggyg - test more to see where you are BG wise - and always carry a hypo remedy with you cos when on hols I too do more physical exercise whether it's walking or swimming, always remembering even strolling short distances can have more effect when it's stinking hot. Any of the Greek islands/coast can be stinking hot relatively early in the year - but usually cooler in the evenings than in later months.

Just enjoy - and learn from it for every other year of your life to come!
