Hobbies to keep you sane

Puzzles. Can be puzzles with a predetermined solution (jigsaws, crosswords) or puzzles with an indeterminate solution (cooking odd stuff, fiddling with bits of electronics, making sense of data) - anything that gets the old brain working, albeit ever more slowly these days.

Also moderating on the forum and helping the admin by looking at what all you good folk are up to and doing what I can to help keep the forum the sort of place most of the members are looking for. Sometimes that can present real puzzles!

I love to knit, crotchet, cross stitch, bake cakes, yoga although not sure that counts as a hobby, read and now I am not working hoping to add gardening to the list, as while working I saw the garden as a chore and did very little to it.

I enjoy reading, crocheting (i taught myself during lockdown so still learning things), trying new crafts (felting, quilling, clay models, resin). I've started getting out into the garden more now i'm not at work so hopefully as the weather gets better i can start growing things. I do enjoy walking but lately having a problem with pain in one heel.

@Leadinglights how did you learn stained glass making? Did you do a course or teach yourself?

I taught myself, I have been doing it for quite a long time. It all started when my other half fancied having a go at doing it and I bought him the glass and a pattern to make a lampshade which he did, his Dad had given him some equipment which we brought back from South Africa.
He then made 3 panels to go in the front door. I then started to do some lamps which we have all around the house.
I didn't do much for a while as I was really busy at work but then when I retired and during covid I made so much stuff, mainly suncatchers and small panels and mirrors, I luckily found a craft shop where I can sell stuff and make things for friends and do commissions for people.
I just love doing it. Other half doesn't do any, he sort of lost interest after making the things he did. The biggest thing to learn is how to cut the glass as you need to do that accurately so you can fit the pieces to the pattern you are using without having to grind the edges too much and then it is a matter of getting a neat solder line which takes practice.

CW is a form of meditation to me. It's something where focusing on the moment is what it's all about.

Got an vintage radio running at the moment - beautiful thing and given it's over 40 years old it works brilliantly.

Been sending on my straight key and a type of key called a cootie. A cootie is quite hard to master but I'm pretty good with it now.

As for flying yesterday. I didn't mean to land in a tree!! I did fly the green plane much better though. All good fun 🙂

Well I think you do a great job of moderating.

Keeping carnivorous plants
Keeping fish and shrimps
Learning Turkish 🙂
I also enjoy macro photography (flowers and insects) although I haven't done any lately.
I wish there was a way to give you a double thumbs up. Love these ones extra!

Mine are:

Rugby - playing and watching the women’s
Walking
Running
Camping in our VW
Jigsaws
Listening to podcasts
Eating nice food - trying new cafes, restaurants etc. not cooking ha!

And since we moved into this house gardening, very new to it, I don’t know much but I enjoy it and we have an nice established front and back garden so it helps some things are already set up and doing well.

Great post :starstruck:

I noticed the Women's world cup will be on in the UK later in the year. Any teams I should be looking out for?
The semi-finals are in Bristol and I have a couple of tickets but no idea who to expect to see.
Well done. I only managed to get 2 tickets to the opening round at Salford (my local) and no other matches. I am not over it yet, I really wanted to see England, France, or New Zealand. And I would have loved the final at Twickenham.

You will be seeing some great rugby which ever teams end up there.

The tickets I have are a double header, int he first round, its Australia (6th) vs Samoa (14th), and Scotland (7th) vs Wales (10th).

Current top 10 rankings, may change after 6 nations and other international matches between now and then. There's a load of these top teams playing other matches even in July, so still things to learn for the teams, and injuries to avoid 😳

1 England
2 Canada
3 New Zealand
4 France
5 Ireland
6 Australia
7 Scotland
8 Italy
9 USA
10 Wales

Revisiting this thread I see an earlier post of mine regarding Lewis chess pieces that I had forgotten about. Meanwhile I have disposed of a wardrobe for some friends who don't have a car. I saved some of the wood and made a watch box.1000000117.jpg1000000118.jpg
Wifey and her sister like to go to quilt shows which is where she picked up that wonderful fabric. The chess set is now back on my to-do list.

That is a beautiful box Chris. Are you going to make a board as well as a box for the chess set?

"Are you going to make a board as well as a box for the chess set?"

Yes, that was the plan. My problem is that I just have so much going on that I had actually forgotten all about that project.
