I am registered with the obesity clinic, they are going to review me in Dec 2011. I am seriously tempted to go down the gastric option. There is a choice of gastric sleeve, gatric pump or gastric bypass. I have just been recently diagnosed and still getting to grips with diabetes. On a more positive note, one of my friends remarked earlier that I was the first person she knew who upon being diagnosed, went into research rather than just saying "oh well, and just carrying on like before". It's just fear of the unknown. I just ordered the Gretchen Becker book as well. I know they say not to get anxious or stressed, however that is like telling a person not to think about the pink elephant. Bear with me, still in the overwhelming stage. Luckily I have some friends who are supportive, they too have that fear in their minds as they too have struggled with weight. One of the positives I take from this is that I neither drink or smoke. My delusion came from believing that because I have had complimentary therapies for previous ailments, and learnt a technique myself, that this would not happen to me...I have a lot to learn

Hello Rustee and welcome to the forum. Thank you for sharing your story with us.

You are doing the right thing by being proactive and fiinding out more. We control the diabetes better when we are able to make informed choices. There is a lot to learn and because we are all different, different things affect us in different ways.

Please feel free to pop in whenever you like and ask as many questions as you like. As we are a varied bunch there will be an answer before very long. We are (or try to be) supportive and informative.🙂

Hi rustee.

It's true that many people diagnosed with Type 2 (and type 1) try to pretend it's not happening but the fact that youve joined the forum and want to make the changes is probably at least 50% of the battle won.

There are many members on here who have taken things steadily, with your positive attitude, and managed to turn the diabetes (and other problems with it) around, and now feel more in control of their future.

I can't really comment on the gastric surgery but I would imagine you will find things a lot easier to cope with once you see how your lifestyle changes start make a difference. I'm not a great believer in complimenary therapies but I know that anythign that makes you feel you have a means to beat whatever demons or ailments you can only be a positive, providing it's in conjunction with a proven method. Good on ya for wanting to turn things around and I'm sure you'll be able to advise others on how to do it soon enough.🙂

Thank you guys. I am guilty of two things being hard on myself when things go wrong in general, and also excessive googling. I really should know better, there is no quick-fix. I do the vicious cycle thing, insofar as googling looking, then you see something that makes you feel worse.. I've been told "we all do that sometimes". I REALLY SHOULD KNOW BETTER!

Although I have been told, justto concentrate on losing weight. I was thinking of starting a food diary. When I wake up ( I get a little sleep now), I usually take my hypertensions meds, then approx 8am have my metformin with my brekkie, then go out for maybe lunch. I think it's vital that I start to get that discpline early on. methinks I will buy a notebook and start this real soon.

Hi,

I was diagnosed with diabetes January 2009. I decided to go down the gastric surgery route. But after a lot of research & honesty with myself, I realised that even if I changed myself physically I STILL had to change my thoughts and most importantly my behaviour! A website you might find interesting is: http://www.wlsinfo.org.uk/ (Weight Loss Surgery Information and Forum). I also joined OA (Overeaters Anonymous). I got through all the 'tests' for gastric bypass and was offered the surgery (my BMI at that time was 50 and I weighed almost 27 stone). I was put on the waiting list - I waited approximately 10 months. Four days before the surgery I decided I couldn't go through with such radical surgery. I have been going to OA for the past two years, changed my diet and have released 10 stone!! My diabetes is manageable!! As is my food choices. My BMI is down to 35 and my HbA1c is 7.2. Slowly, one day at a time, I'm changing. I wish you everything of the best as you go through your process of deciding what's best for you and your health. I'm glad you have supportive friends - so important!!

Take care,
Cath

Thanks for that Cath. I had prior to the diagnosis lost 2 and half stone due to joining Slimming World, but all information helps. Overeater Anonymous - I have never heard of that one before. I recently started walking, and it feels good. Is that where you discuss food cravings and how to deal with them. Thanks again
