Oh dear ... I phoned for my HbA1c result this morning and they said that it had remained pretty much the same as 3 months ago despite me taking 2 metformin 500mg instead of 1 per day. I've got to go and see the doctor tomorrow ... preparing myself for slapped wrists and I don't know what.

Feeling a bit down at the moment - probably a good thing that I go to work in half an hour to take my mind of it..

Wish me luck tomorrow please:(?

Lairy

I will wish you luck, but also tell you not to feel that you will be admonished - that shouldn't happen! If you have been doing what you can then it is up to the doctor to try and suggest ways that you might be able to improve. I suspect it may mean an increase in the metformin dose, but as I say, please don't feel guilty or that you have let yourself down. This is a very tricky condition to manage well, and the fact that you have maintianed your HbA1c rather than increased it is good news. Obviously, the doctor and you would have hoped for a decrease after the increase in meds, but the fact it is unchanged probably just means that the dose isn't quite right yet.

Hope it all goes well! 🙂

Hi Lairy,

Sorry your results have left you feeling a bit down. Please try not to beat yourself up about it though. Maybe it's the wrong kind of meds for you. If Metformin was the perfect treatment for all T2's there would be no need for anything else. You are still on a fairly low dose too so maybe the doc just wants to up your dose. Remember it's a joint effort between you and the docs to get and keep good control.

Good luck but I'm sure it wont be as bad as you think. XXXXX

Aw, don't be so hard on yourself, its not easy to get levels to somewhere near normal 🙂 All you can do is keep trying and take each day as it comes!

Good luck for tomorrow,

Shirl

Don't feel guilty about not getting it quite right, we all have problems managing at some time or other. It has been said many times before, but diabetes is not an exact scince and it takes time to get it just right for each person. I'm sure things will go well for you with the doctor tomorow.

Hi Lairy. it is good that your results haven't got worse. don't blame yourself that they haven't improved - the focus should be on getting your medication to the right level which may involve a number of changes before it is right. Your doctor should work in partnership with you so that you come to a solution that is best for you. All the best for a positive discussion with your doctor.

Metformin isn't like insulin, it doesn't actually decrease your BG hardly at all (1% is it???)

It's more that it helps your body better utilise such insulin as it still kicks out. So if you aren't on enough Met to counteract your IR as much as it needs counteracting - then you won't see much change.

What are you doing to give your body a helping hand? - managing carbs, extra exercise, whatever?

Thanks for the kind support guys = I really appreciate it.

Trophywench ... during the first 3 months I was exercising at the leisure centre twice a week on the PALS scheme, but I haven't been so much this last few weeks, and not at all for the past two. I know that I really need to get back into it, but I found it a rush as the classes finish at 11 and I start my job at 12 and obviously need time to shower, change into a suit and drive off (eating on the way ... don't tell PC Plod though!). Plus I have been staving off a cold and have horrible hayfever at the moment.

I have also lapsed in keeping my food diary, which I found really useful and I am kicking myself for not doing it. And to save a bit of money I haven't been testing very often as I don't get strips prescribed and have to buy my own, so I have only really used them if I feel sleepy after eating too many carbs etc.

I need to pledge the following things:
1. To re-start my exercise classes as soon as possible
2. To re-start my food diary regularly
3. To eat far less carbs as I know that they cause me havoc
4. Look at recipes that are going to be satisfying and not push up my bg
5. As a result of all the above, I should hopefully start losing more weight as well. It has been yo-yo-ing recently ... down 2lbs then up 2lbs and then 2lbs more, then down again etc ad nauseum.

Disappointed with myself, but at least I know that there are things I should be doing.

Hugs to you all

Lairy xxx

Well then you've answered your own question LOL - nice you are being honest with yourself, it is the only way.

However when you present yourself in front of your GP please tell him how excellently you have done considering the hay fever and the cold etc etc etc

:D :D :D

and start with the things you find easiest, do it in small steps, even small improvements are worthwhile. You're already doing the right thing by telling it all here!

Sorry to hear you are feeling down about your results, try not to blame yourself as you are trying hard. Try not to make all those changes at once, if you are anything like me it will be too much to cope with and then you will give up as quickly as you started, introduce one small change at a time and go from there. Good luck with your docs appointment, hopefully he/she will give you some advice and support. xxx

Thanks all for your advice and good wishes.

It was a good meeting and he didn't tell me off 🙂 My HbA1c went down from 7.0 in March to 6.9, so I have been put on 3 metformins a day. I'm not far off the target that he wants me to get to, i.e. around 6.5. Will take your advice Natalie and take my pledges gradually so that I can cope. I also got meds for my hayfever and I feel better already (used the nasal spray). I have also got an asthma review on Tuesday.

Have been 'good' today and am feeling much happier.

By the way, does anyone know how the HbA1c figure relates to a finger-prick test? Is it usually higher?
