Hey
So I've been unofficially diagnosed with type one for around a month. I say unofficially because my GP thinks it's type one but we won't know for sure till I see the consultant tomorrow.
It's all come as a massive shock, and given I'm a bus driver I'm also unable to work due to dvla suspending my license while things get more stable. While not unexpected this has made the diagnosis even harder to deal with

Hi and welcome, must have been a shock for you with the double whammy in your license being suspended, hopefully it won’t take long to get things under control for you and you will be back on the road. I am sure other type 1s will be along to comment, as I type two I can only imagine how you must be feeling. I also have heart disease and have an ICD implant, my biggest fear is not getting shocked but knowing that if I do I’ll have my license suspended until I’m stable again so I feel for you x

Hello and welcome @NatalieC88 🙂

I'm sorry to read about your diagnosis and hope things are made more clear tomorrow at your consultant appointment. It is a lot to take in with a steep learning curve but with time things will start to fall into a new normal.

If you need insulin to manage your blood glucose then you will need 3 continuous months of glucose readings once you are stable enough to reapply for your licence. I know this must be incredibly hard when it is your job - here's the detail scroll down for Group 2 Bus information. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/diabetes-mellitus-assessing-fitness-to-drive

I wish you well tomorrow and hope things settle for you.

Welcome to the forum @NatalieC88

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, and I hope that your appointment tomorrow makes things clearer.
Are you able to take anyone else with you. I found this very helpful in the early days. We thought together about any questions that we had, made a note of these which my OH had whilst I talked to the consultant. He made notes during the appointment and prompted me about anything I had forgotten to ask. We then went through his notes over a coffee afterwards.

Sorry about the impact on your job at present. The article Flower has referred you to explains all the rules around this, and I am sure your consultant will be able to explain more.

Although there is a lot to learn very quickly at the start, it is a manageable condition. There is plenty of help on here, and I know that I have learnt most of what I know from others on here. Feel free to ask absolutely any questions you have.
