High readings since the covid vaccine

Hi there, newly diagnosed three weeks ago and my levels have been pretty good for such early days but I had my vaccine Friday and the last three days I'm having some big spikes into double figures post meal. Yesterday I went up to 11 so I upped a unit before breakfast today and just came in at 12.3!!! Feeling rather freaked out. Could this be due to the vaccine please? Anyone else experienced the same?

There are many things which affect our blood sugars including food, alcohol, exercise, sickness, a good night's sleep a bad night's sleep, stress, drugs, ...

Our body fighting off a virus before we experience any other symptoms can cause our blood sugars to rise.

So, yes, the vaccine could well be the reason for higher readings. I have not had my jab yet but I have read about some others seeing rises and others seeing more lows.

Do you know your "sick day rules" (how to mange your diabetes when you are ill)? If not, I recommend talking to your diabetes team.
If you see your blood sugars rising, it is also useful to measure your ketones - high blood sugars and high ketones can be dangerous. If you do not have strips (and meter) to measure ketones I recommend asking for this too.

Thank you. No I don't know about sick day rules but seeing my consultant for the first time today so ill ask him.

My post meal readings were in the twenties at diagnosis so I'm not overly worried more just baffled and hoping it subsides asap. My fasting was higher at 14 on diagnosis too!

Ok so it likely could be the vaccine causing this then as it's the only thing that's changed. Thank you

Pardon me for asking @SianyBee but how much insulin is your own pancreas still producing? Or, is it already as dead as a dodo as far as insulin is concerned?

Is it the jab, or something else?

What I am wondering about if it was 'just' on its last legs when you were diagnosed 3c, and since then it's travelled further on it's journey over rainbow bridge your BG would increase from not having as much insulin as it did 3 weeks ago.

I think I've probably had this a good six months to a year minimum really without knowing.

I think it's Def the jab as I spoke to another lady on here who had strangely high readings too. I had it again today even higher after breakfast at 16! I rang my nurse and she agreed it's prob the vaccine as it seems to have increased my blood pressure too, she explained that the body will be thinking it's sick almost and in fight or flight mode, producing cortisol to try and produce the antibodies. So it makes a lot of sense for sure. Hopefully in a week or so once I've built up protection it will subside.
