After eating 2 small meat puddings and a few chips and taking 19 units of novarapid
My blood reading 4 hrs later was 16.8
Should of only had one meat pudding.

Touch of correction needed? Thirty lashes should do it :D

Doesn’t matter how long you’ve had diabetes, every day is a learning day🙂

I wouldn't know how much correction to take lol

What was your reading before?
Have you still not asked about carb counting? Or correcting? xx

What ratios are you working with Lesley? 19 units on a 1:10 would mean 190g carbs which seems a lot for 2 small pies and a few chips to then end up on a 16.8. As Kaylz says it depends on what your reading was before to compare but I can't imagine it would have been that high.

Matt I'm almost certain Lesley is still taking set units xx

My reading beforehand was 8.3 I did the carb count but not sure about corrections.i normally just try to work it out myself

2 units for every 10 grams

So a 1:5 ratio with 95g carbs. Chips because of the fat content (and maybe the pies as well) tend to take longer to break down before glucose is in your system so it could be a timing issue in that your NovoRapid has peaked whilst the glucose is still being released. Split NovoRapid doses are a possibility for things like that but you would need to speak to your DSN about it.

The starting standard correction is 1u for 3 mmol/l but obviously this varies between people. Again you would need to speak to your DSN/diabetic team about it to see what they advise?

How do I do a 1.5 ratio..sorry if I sound a bit thick but my pens haven't got half measures.

Sorry, didn't make it clear. As Kaylz says. (You have 2 units for every 10g carbs or 1 unit for every 5g carbs i.e. a 1:5 ratio. Ratios are usually shown by what 1 unit to carbs is.)

He means 1 unit of insulin covers 5g carbs x
See I don't understand all this..I will call my nurse tomorrow..I don't seem to get much help now from the nurse..I'm still learning lol x

I'm rather shocked that you've been diagnosed over a year and they haven't taught you about correction doses as they are very necessary at the levels you are experiencing, how are your ketones? xx

I know it's bad....my ketones have been at 0.1 think that's good x

You really need to push them about that, what DO you do when your levels are that high? I don't want to scare you but prolonged higher levels in the long run cause the damage so this is quite worrying to me, yeah 0.1 is fine xx

That's OK thank you

Don't panic about it Lesley. Just have a word with your nurse about your figures and mention correction doses. Longer term a formal carb counting course like DAFNE would be a good option.
